Hi there
I couldn't find my grandfather, his siblings, mother and gran in the 1921 census. His mother remarried in Dec 1921 so have her address at that time and looked for this street - there are two households on that street in the 1911 census that don't have returns in 1921.
The family were mill workers and cleaners so don't expect they were abroad at the time.
Any explanation?!
Cheers

Presumably you have searched by names and then the street. Have you tried searching for neighbours from 1911?
I haven’t used a search with 1921 since it was first published and my family’s street was transcribed wrongly.

I've lost count of the number of mistranscription errors I have submitted since the 1921 census was released and I'm still doing it.
Though we can't give specifics from the 1921 census if you supply names and approx birth years ( and at least a county)we can have a look and perhaps advise what to use as search criteria?

Just a thought, as the 1921 census was delayed and wasn't taken till 19th June, many people were on holiday. Perhaps the Mill had an annual shutdown week and they'd gone on holiday? Even if they'd only gone for a couple of days they may be listed elsewhere with relatives or in a boarding house at the seaside.

Hi Boo and thanks for responding.
My grandad Tom WHITELEY, his siblings, father, mother and maternal gran are shown in 1911 at 94 Spencer Street Oldham. In the 1921 census, some others live there.
I've searched the whole of the UK for them and cannot find any of them.
Edith WHITELEY remarried in Dec 1921 and was living at 16 Medlock Street per the marriage certificate.
I've compared the hand-written returns for 1911 with 1921 and there isn't a form for No 16 nor No 19 Medlock Street. I suspect the family were living at No 16 :)
Let me know what you find,
Regards
Martin

PS - I should have added that Tom’s father & brother Fred both had died before the 1921 census.

For Edith, don't forget that Spring/Autumn 1921 electoral registers for Oldham are online (England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1910-1932)
Medlock Street 1921 address search, 10 results
House numbers 2, 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, 20, 22, 9, 13
Schedules 112 - 122
Minus schedule 117, which I guess would equate to house number 16.

Hi Jon and thanks for this.
Tom’s father died in 1918 so I don’t think there were any voters in the household in 1921.
Will check,

Have you found Edith's (soon to be) new husband in the 1921 census?
Worth a look maybe, in case they were together early somewhere.

Edith Whiteley is listed as the occupier in the Rate books as living at 16 Medlock Street Oldham in 1921 (month May)

Thanks CD!
So the mystery is why 16 & 19 Medlock Street aren’t in the online census…
You lot are FAB!

Utter fail here, I've tried every trick I usually use, nationwide, for each child's first name and approx year of birth and scanned down the results looking for possible mistranscriptions.
I've tried similar searches specifying another person in the household or the children's orphanhood status and still nothing.
I've even tried the Scotland 1921 census.
Sadly the enumerators schedule books (which we are used to seeing in pre 1911 census where the original forms were not retained) were destroyed in a fire.
and the original schedules can't be checked at the N.A. as they only give access to the FindMyPast database and we can't order and see the originals.
IF the form was missed when they were scanned, then your only hope is that when FindMyPast's contract for exclusivity expires another company may scan them and they 'may' turn up.
Sorry

Thanks for the confirmation Boo.

Hi Martin
Like Boo I've also tried a number of 'tricks' and come up empty handed. I wondered if the street address had been badly mangled in transcription?
I would contact Findmypast and see if there are any known issues with certain areas. You can say that Edith is listed in the Rate books at this address in May 1921 so you know she's there. I've also checked when the Oldham wakes week was in 1921 - it was the last Saturday in August therefore they should not have been on holiday. Sometimes the 'home' return is missing as the household is away but you should pick these people up elsewhere in England or Wales.
A real mystery for certain.

Hi CD
A mystery indeed! Good to get the cross-reference against the Rates!
