HI there.
I Have written a novel inspired by my family history in Shrewsbury.
Anyone who lives in the town might be interested in reading it. Various places in the town are mentioned. I started writing it in 2018 but had a stroke in 2021, which delayed my writing. I am still recovering, but I am pleased to say it is available on Amazon now. There is life after a stroke!
Title.....Number 81 by Christine Bhasin.
Best wishes

My G Grandmother Martha Adams died 1960 aged 96 when I was 9- she was from Astley and came to live here in Garston ,Liverpool - is Astley ( just outside Shrewsbury ) mentioned in the book by any chance ???
-
Thank you for replying. No, my novel is set in the town centre of Shrewsbury and around the Abbey Church. Funny enough, I have a nephew who lives in Astley.

My paternal great grandparents were married in St. Mary’s ,just off the Main Street ,Pride Hill ,Leading from the rail station up to the shops near the market hall.
Blakemore and Maddox ,in about 1850.
Can’t get to all my F.H stuff as my son is temporarily in the room where it is stored .No room to move!
They moved to Snailbeach where the lead mine was .
Do we need an ISBN number?
I hope it sells well. VIKTORIA.

What period is the novel set in?
Went to the Wakeman School and married in the Abbey 45 years ago, so very familiar territory.
-
Hi SMJ, Thank you for your reply. My novel is set from 1898 to 1915 and then in the modern day. My brother went to the Wakeman school. The story is set around Hills Lane in town and around Whitehall Street near the Abbey Church.
best wishes

I hope my ancestors were well behaved!!
My Great Aunt's husband grew up in Hills Lane, his Grandmother (Harriet Jones/Owen) was the inn keeper of the Bugle Inn in 1901.
-
Hi there. oh i didn't realise there was a third inn in hills lane the GULLET INN and the Ship are mentioned in my book.

Looking at this large scale town plan (1882, reprinted 1909) , it seems that the Bugle Inn was in Bugle Lane just off Hill's Lane (see top centre of the zoomed in view).

@AlanBoyd Thanks for the link to the map.
I'm familiar with the location of Bugle Lane after researching my 2xGtGf Edmund Jones who lived in Barker Street (1841), Bridge Street (1851, 1861 & 1871). However, the address of the Bugle is listed as 7 Hills Lane in the 1901 Census and Shropshire Archives have it listed as Hill's Lane too. I think there was frontage to both Hill's Lane and Bugle Lane.
Bugle Lane was also known as Payne's Lane and Little Lane and was demolished in the 1930s. Hill's Lane was also known as Knockin Street.
Photos of the Bugle can be found at http://www.shropshirehistory.org.uk/html/search/?fields%5Btype%5D%5B%5D=&keyword=bugle&submit=Go&keywordSubmit=true (http://www.shropshirehistory.org.uk/html/search/?fields%5Btype%5D%5B%5D=&keyword=bugle&submit=Go&keywordSubmit=true)
Harriet's son George Owen Jones and family were living in 30 Hill's Lane, but it appears their young 5 year old son (George Ernest Campion Jones) was farmed out and staying at the Bugle with his gran.
