Where does the time go? It is almost time for Mass Observation Day, 12 May - Sunday.
So, prepare to record your day and other comments for the archive.

I'm afraid my day would be incredibly boring. ;D I live a very humdrum life doing nothing of any great moment.
It mainly consists of having meals, doing whatever housework needs to be done and doing my jigsaw puzzles.
Are these Mass Observation people really interested in that?
-
Apparently so.
Sunday is generally a quiet day for me too but I generally add comments about how things have changed in the past year; recent events that I feel should be noted and so on.
Jackie
-
Every Sunday is a day to observe the Sabbath and go to Mass.
-
Each person has their own story to tell be it an eventful day or not.
It is also Mothers' Day here.
Jackie
-
I have a friends birthday to go to on 10th May so 12th May I will probably be writing down
"Day 1 million of trying to find the origins of my 3 ancestors who said "not born in county" in 1841 census but died before 30th March 1851". ;D

Sunday is karaoke at the Yacht Club!
I haven't been to church in over 50 years ;)
-
I may well be in Church, but it won't be Mass!
-
I haven't been inside a church for yonks.
Jackie

"I haven't been inside a church for yonks."
I grudgingly attended confirmation class and then said, "No thanks, I don't believe a word of it." In 65 years, I've never been back.
-
"I haven't been inside a church for yonks."
That could make for an interesting read if you chose a church to go to on 12 May. You don't have to stick to your local parish church, do something adventurous and find something else ....
-
I think I will give church a miss.
Thinking back, it was weddings we went to church for.

I thought I might too. the waiting list is probably too long to make the 12th though. :D
-
I haven't been inside a church for yonks.
Many of them have remarkable architecture, so I do visit quite a few as a tourist.
-
It appears to be some sort of badge of honour, not to have been in a church for 50 years?
-
Thanks for the reminder about this.
I intend to take part and if all goes to plan as hoped I shall be able to get to Church. So far rota has this as a day off, unless otherwise changes.
Girl Guide just to add, yes I feel quite certain that Mass Observation will be interested in your day. They are interested in ordinary day to day lives. They do not ask for the sensational; although I think they would be interested in this too if something like that happens. ;)
-
There would appear to be some confusion as to what Mass Observation Day is all about?
From https://massobs.org.uk/the-archive/12th-may/:
In 1937 Mass Observation called for people from all parts of the UK to record everything they did from when they woke up in the morning to when they went to sleep at night on 12th May. Mass Observation revived the project in 2010 since then we’ve received thousands of day diaries, creating an invaluable resource of everyday life across the UK.
Some people seem to think it's an Observation of Religious Mass?
-
A poor choice of terminology to explain the function.
Diary Day,
or
“The day when everyone records in writing every minute activity that they experience or undertake from waking to bedtime”
OK so that one may be a bit of a mouthful.
-
I don't think it is a religious mass. But it will be a Sunday and like some others on here my normal day will include going to Church if I am not on shift.
-
“The day when everyone records in writing every minute activity that they experience or undertake from waking to bedtime”
Isn't that every day on some of the social media?
-
Not that I go on social media!
Only 12 days to go .....
Jackie
-
Flexing my fingers already.
A normal year with its ups and downs, some of which I shall comment on.

Jackie
But surely it is supposed to be about the DAY, not the year??
-
Yes, it is about the day but having submitted a diary for the last couple of years, I refer to some of the changes I have experienced in that year.

It's going to be a funny sort of day for me, nerves screwing up tighter as the hours pass as I'll be in hospital next day having all my woman's bits removed. So I'll be ticking off whether preparations I've made are adequate.
Perhaps I should go to church that day. But then, my loved ones have all died in May or a year ending in 4 or a combination of both so I'll swerve that.
-
Oh Heck Susie!
Pracise your breathing techniques.
All will be well. :-* :-*
-
Oh I feel for you, Susie! Your feeling nervous is understandable but I do think like Mowsehowse that you will be fine. Tell yourself they do these ops week in week out. Everything will be alright or 'Andra tutto bene' as the Italians said during lockdown.
Best Wishes on your recovery. :-*
-
Thank you, Mowsehouse and river Tyne Lass for your kind thoughts and morale booster.
Sorry for a maudlin observation on a pleasant topic. Take no notice, I'm my Dad's daughter - a glass half empty type!
-
You have every right to be apprehensive Susie.....
Just remember that the pessimist ALWAYS finds outcomes better than expected. :D
-
I'm afraid that I too will be awaiting a medical appointment for the following day, so you won't be alone in !Apprehension Alley".
TY
-
I hope it all goes well for you too Threlfallyorky. I feel for you both waiting in 'Apprehension Alley'. :-\ I'm rooting for you both. Take care. :-*
-
I am also sending staunch support ThrelfallYorky.
The only way is up.
I am sure all will be well.x
-
Oh, very best wishes for those having operations or investigations .
You would not be normal if you did not have some anxiety but think how many get through such things every day.
I am looking forward to reading all went well for you .
Cheerio.Viktoria.
-
Very best wishes Threlfallyorky from me too. xxx
-
Thanks to you all. My worst apprehension is always having to drive there and back, gets me so stressed.

Sorry to hear of upcoming medical procedures and anxiety it’s causing. I’m sure as others have said these things are routine for the medics and you’ll be in good hands.
I wish all the best of luck to you and we’ll be thinking of you.
On a different matter ( the title of the post) I shall, as I have done for many years, be writing my daily events, thoughts of the day etc and send it off to Mass Obs.
The diaries are used by scholars/researchers to read to aid writing papers etc and I’m sure even what we might consider a mundane day could have a little nugget of information that could help someone somewhere to add interest or facts to a paper. Obviously the day of the week changes every year and what we do on given days also changes!
Good luck with your diary tomorrow.

A rather soggy start to this Mass Observation day - hopefully we will soon get a break from these showers.
I have a notebook ready to record the day as it happens, I find that helps.

Mine has started badly, and seems to be getting worse already.

Oooops! Hope things improve rapidly. :-*
-
Yes, I do hope your day improved.
I have prepared my draft submission and will check it over today before sending it off.
Jackie
-
Hope yesterday's trials went well, and everyone is feeling better for the "interventions".

Moi aussi Jackie. :D
-
I've just sent mine off too! :)
-
Almost ready to send mine too… just a reread first.
-
Written mine - just can't seem to find the place to send it?? No idea why.

Hi ThrelfallYorky
Add this statement below to your diary. (You could copy and paste it for quickness.) This ensures they can accept your entry. Then click on the link below. There is an email address in the contact info at the bottom of the page that you can send your diary to. I hope this helps.
“I donate my 12th May diary to the Mass Observation Archive. I consent to it being made publicly available as part of the Archive and assign my copyright in the diary to the Mass Observation Archive Trustees so that it can be reproduced in full or in part on websites, in publications and in broadcasts as approved by the Mass Observation Trustees. I agree to the Mass Observation Archive assuming the role of Data Controller and the Archive will be responsible for the collection and processing of personal data and ensuring that such data complies with the DPA.”

I sent mine this morning.
Quite nice to read previous submissions, which l have from 2019. :D
-
Thanks, River Tyne Lass - worked it out, a bit later. Think I simply couldn't find the old address in my e-mails! I'm such a dim lass, I've done it for years, but over recent months various internet issues haven't half messed life up! I didn't want to stop after all these years, even though day was just as boring as usual, the most exciting bit being a lively thunderstorm!
