Hi,
This is a curley one.
In the 1911 census Thomas Wilfred Mugridge sometimes spelt Mogridge is with his grandfather.
There is a marraige of a Thomas Mugridge in 1906 BUT the son of his grandfather is too young and I did find a Thomas Mugridge born Totnes in the army in Malta and listed as single.
Before I purchase the certificates I wonder if any of you had any ideas who the parents of Thomas Wilfred Mugridge are.
Cheers

Hi.
His baptism in Haberton gives mother as Mary. GRO index has no mothers maiden name so Mary was unmarried.

1891 census for grandparents shows a 4yr old daughter Mary H (Hunter) Mugridge b Harberton. She is not with them in 1901. Thomas Mugridge & Mary Ann Hunter married 1880
Mary H married Ernest Thomas Basten (Bastin) in 1920 & died 30.8.1932 aged 45 at the Royal Albert hospital in Plymouth
-
Yes that makes sence.
Mary Hunter Mugridge 1887-1932 is the second eldest child of Thomas Mugridge 1847-1918 and Mar Ann Hunter 1858-1941.
I wonder who the dad was????.
Cheers

You would have to use the DNA route for that answer

Just about to tell my friend the person she thought was her great grandfather is in fact her great uncle and the lady she thought was her great aunt is now her great grandmother.
Many thanks to you all.

Hi,
It looks like Thomas Wilfred Mugridge's father was richard or William WALKE.

The 1901 and 1911 census has both a Richard and a William living at Higher Broadridge, Cornworthy Tideford, Cornworthy, Totnes, Devon.

It might be worth contacting SOUTH WEST HERITAGE TRUST: Devon Archive Catalogue to see if they have the original order.

You will find Richard on the 1939 register spelt as Walk. He never married & he died 8.5.1949 & left a will. He left £9,469 which was a reasonable sum back then. Might be worth downloading a copy for £1.50 to see whether he left anything to his son Thomas
His address on the probate entry was Lower Tideford Farm - Cornworthy

Thank you so much.
Your detective work is much appreciated.
I have added him to my friend tree.
-
Hi Daiey,
As an order was made against Richard would it not seem logical to rule out William?
Cheers

I agree - I think it was a typo - his father was William & he had an older brother William Hodge Walke b 1866
Richard was b 1869 so was a lot older than Mary Hunter Mugridge
-
1911 census Mary is a servant aged 23 transcribed as Mary Hunter Meyridge. Head of household is Henry Peeke
-
Found her in 1901 transcribed as May Mugridge aged 14 - servant to Walter & Philippa Grills
-
I agree that Richard looks more likely but I mentioned William as he was named in the other newspaper report.
I would like to see the original record to be sure, but I can't find a way to see it.
-
Sorry Daisy I did not notice that.
Mmmmm.
-
Thank you too Carolew
