I have a Catherine nee Marriner (born about 1815), from Longtown, Arthuret, Cumberland on one census and Camberwell Surrey on another census. She married a William Eley (Messenger Admiralty - not sure of what that means) and had a daughter Mary Eley (1856) who is my GGG. Mary Eley's siblings were Charles and Frances). Mary Eley married Dean Gauntlett .
I am trying to find who Catherine’s parents were. Can anyone out there help please. :)

This seems a likely baptism:

There is a marriage on 20th March 1810 between Fergus Marrinear [sic] and Jane Norman in Kirklinton, Cumberland.
I can't find an obvious marriage between William and Catherine to confirm her father's name.
It looks like their first may have been Jane Mary Eley, born in 1843 in Cumberland, but died as an infant:
ELEY, JANE MARY MARRINER

Then they moved to London:
ELEY, WILLIAM MARRINER

Thank you everyone for your help and for picking up that one sibling of Mary Eley’s died at aged 1 - didn’t pick that up.
I also have this snippet of information from my grandfather’s notes that Mary Gauntlett (nee Eley) came from the family of the Duke of Leinster also Earl of Kildare. Not even sure how I would go about trying to trace this? There is some link with Norman-Irish, perhaps FitzGerald. Perhaps some illegitimacy along the line, or someone trying to say that she came from a ‘good family’. Who knows.

Have you traced William Eley ?. Census states he was born North Allerton Yorkshire.
Baptism of Mary he was a Messenger
Baptism of Frances he was a Valet
When Frances married William is listed as a Clerk at the Admiralty.

Has anyone found William in 1851? If I have found the right family, he is not with Catherine and the children. Catherine describes herself as butler's wife

If there is an Irish connection, my first thought would be it would be from Mary's grandfather Fergus.
he appears on both 1841 and 1851 censuses on his own (In 1851 he is recorded as widower) so it looks as if Jane died before 1841 and all the children have flown the nest. In 1841 he is recorded as born in county and in 1851 as born in Longtown.
there is a William Marriner in Longtown in 1861 (with baby son Fergus) who fits with William the son of Fergus and Jane.

Fergus baptised 17 Jan 1789 in Arthuret s/o William and Mary nee Bradshaw
-
William and Mary also baptised a son called William in 1785, he died in 1849 age 64, but cannot find burial for William snr

Where did you find this information please. As I haven’t found this. Yes have occupations of Valet and Messenger in Admiralty.
Thanks
