Title: Please help! Birth certificate request
Post by: Nekm88 on Saturday 06 April 24 19:06 BST (UK)
Hi there,

I have recently discovered that my great grandfathers name is Malcolm
Smith born in Toronto around 1902.
Would anyone with access to Canadian birth records please check this out for me? Details of parents would be most helpful!

Thanks so much in advance

See the date on the UK 1939 register was 16 October 1902, this might help the search.

Do you know if he was living in Canada in 1911, please?  Do you know the name of his wife (if he in fact did marry, in Ontario)?  A Malcolm Alexander Smith was born in 1904 in Toronto; perhaps he was your ancestor.

Added: Sandra’s referenced website might also have Ontario birth and marriage records.

Added again:  If he left Canada at a young age, family could have mentioned Toronto as his birthplace rather than a smaller, lesser known neighbouring town.

Malcom Alexander Smith, born August 9, 1904, York, Ontario.  Parents: Malcom Smith, Mary MacDonald.

From “Schedule A” (list of births), York, York County, Ontario list of births

It looks like this man remained in Canada (or came back) until at least the time of his marriage, in 1935.

Thanks so much for your replies.

Unfortunately, that is all the information I know of. This has only came to light having received a case file from when my grandmother and her mother were resident in the victor home for girls. My grandmother never knew her father as they were deported back to Ireland when she was 6 weeks old.

I can’t seem to get the link to work for the family search site

Malcolm Alexander Smith appears to have remained in Canada as he passed away in 1976 and was buried in Toronto.

Without mentioning names of living people, did family possibly use a (Irish/Scottish) naming pattern?

Thank you Sandra, I have registered but can’t find the birth date of 16th Oct 1902 for Malcolm Smith.

Lisa, my mother has very high Scottish ancestry through dna. I’m presuming Malcolm Smith was maybe born to parents who had originally came from Scotland.

Is Smith the original or adopted
surname ?

My grandmother wasn’t given her father’s surname, hers was Reid.

The only information I have on Malcolm Smith is that he was born in Toronto around 1902 and worked as a silversmith.

Family just arrived; I have a somewhat quick errand to run…

My brother has 36% (if I’m remembering correctly) Scottish DNA.  We have no known Scottish ancestors.  RootsChatters have mentioned that folks went back and forth, between Scotland and Ireland.  DNA can get muddled in the area.

Family is chatting, it’s difficult to concentrate, sorry.

I’m from the Toronto area.  I would enjoy trying to help when I return (perhaps an hour or so).  In the meantime, Sandra (and others) have been tremendously helpful regarding Ontario research.  Perhaps something can be found; don’t give up hope.  ;)

Wonder if the death would also be registered in the UK.
This is a year difference in the birth year out but is this possible ?
There should be a report of a UK citizen who died in the USA unless that's why the Consulate is listed on that death above.

UK Death Registration ????

Malcolm Maclemhan (Maclellan) Smith - 16 October 1903 - 1977 (aged 73 years)
Registration Date   Jan 1977 - Feb 1977 - Mar 1977

Was a police constable for a year but occupation was a wine butler.

I really have no idea, suppose it really is a long shot trying to find out anymore information.

I would know nothing regarding my great grandfather if it hadn’t been for the help of the united church of Canada archives who had a whole file of information regarding my great grandmother.

My grandmother passed away last year not knowing who her father was and now that I finally have a name i would like to see if there is other family out there

She was born in 1931 in Toronto. Her parents were not married. My great grandmother had travelled to Canada from Ireland to work as a domestic from 1927.

Hi,

If you are still interested in this Malcolm as a possibility - his obit is in the Globe and Mail.   As Lisa said, he died in Toronto in 1976.

Malcolm A Smith died Feb 19 1976 in Toronto.   Husband of Ellen McCrohan.  Brother of Florence Scott of St. Catharine's and Duncan Smith of Toronto.   Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Thank you RK! I will definitely keep this in mind.

I have found a 2nd-3rd cousin match for my mother on ancestry. (I have yet to take a test) the cousin match has a paternal grandmother with the name Mabel Annie Smith. However, i cannot find a Malcolm Smith as of yet.

Sorry, I have questions/comments…

I wonder if Smith was a made up surname.   :-\
Was your great grandmother headed back to Ireland c1931 (if you don’t mind sharing)?
Regarding changing occupations…some of my ancestors had very different occupations after they arrived in Canada, I wouldn’t be too concerned about a possible occupation change for Malcolm if he sailed to/returned to England.

1931 Toronto Directory
Malcolm   emp Eatons.  h 2 Chudleigh   [Eatons - department store]
Malcolm D   (Smith Bros).  h 15 Bellefair av
Malcolm F   emp CNR   r 73 Osler    [CNR - Canadian National Railway]
Note:  I removed the link that I originally provided here.  I’ve used the site in the past with no problem.  However, my iPad has been extremely sluggish since opening the site a few minutes ago and I don’t want anyone to experience the same problem.

Added: 1932 directory
Malcolm was a salesman at Eatons
Smith Bros. were bookbinders

Are we ruling out Malcolm Alexander or is he a likely suspect?

Makes you wonder if the surname was fictiious.  The occupation wouldn't fit if he were a silversmith
(think I read that earlier)  ?  Keeping an open mind Lisa.

No good with DNA, never had reason to do that.  Does this refer to the next generation line or a previous generation line.  ??

I believe she is saying her mother has a 2nd to 3rd cousin match with someone.  But, it doesn’t mean that they were only cousins.  Be right back…
Title: Re: Please help! Birth certificate request
Post by: Lisa in California on Sunday 07 April 24 06:14 BST (UK)
I’m experiencing a lot of internet problems tonight.  It takes forever to load sites and now I’m having trouble copying…

2-3 cousin also includes a match between her mother and someone else that could also be a 1st cousin, 1 time removed

and now my Ancestry screen is blank.  There are a few options for 2nd-3rd.

I’m going to close sites, turn off my iPad and will come back shortly.  Very frustrating.

Could that be a child of a brother ?
Title: Re: Please help! Birth certificate request
Post by: Lisa in California on Sunday 07 April 24 06:19 BST (UK)
2nd cousin could also be
“1st cousin 2x removed
Half 1st cousin 1x removed
Half great-granduncle
Half great-grandnephew”
  Source: Ancestry

There were three other examples of 2nd and 3rd cousin definitions but I don’t know if I am allowed to post their examples.

Just making a note because the name was mentioned earlier - it may or may not be of use at some stage ??  There is also an ancestry tree for this one for you to refer to if necessary.

Found an obituary 15 February 1958 - it refers to a Annie Mabel Smith (Mabel Stringer wife of Alfred Stringer) but on her birth the name was Mabel Smith born 31 January 1894

Mabel Smith - Birth Date   31 Jan 1894   South Bruce, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada
Father   Charles Samuel Smith (born in Ontario)  - Mother   Susan Hilson (also born Ontario)
No Scottish connection.

Tried a later birth  year ... another to discount......

Malcolm Herbert Smith -  Birth Date   26 Jul 1909   York, Ontario, Canada
Father    George Herbert Smith Mother    Grace Burns

Seems to go by the middle name Herbert (Malcolm) Smith on his marriage 7 June 1934 - occupation was civil engineer
The obit and find a grave - 1994 -  went under H Malcolm Smith. No mention of a Mabel A Smith  :-\
