Title: Horner Walters Knaresborough
Post by: mrs_tease on Sunday 31 March 24 11:22 BST (UK)
I'm looking for a gentleman named Horner Walters, b. 1810 Knaresborough. I have him in the census from 1871 in Beverley, East Yorkshire. He marries Catherine Hall.
1871 he is a bootmaker and gives Knaresborough as his birth town but by 1881 he lists himself as born in Hull. He stays in Beverley until his death in 1896.

Is anyone able to find anything on him prior to 1871?
It doesn't help that he has a son also named Horner b. 1851 (c)
Thank you

I think he is likely the Son of Robert WALTERS and Isabella HOLME who married 24 February 1807 Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire.

Trish :)

The son was baptised in Hull 7 Oct 1849 with given name as Homer not Horner with same for his dad. Mother’s surname said to be HALL WALTERS.
This according to transcript not real image.

And by the way Knaresborough is in the West Riding not the North Riding.

marriage 21/11/1868 at Sculcoates Church, Hull Mr John Henry Whitaker to Alice, daughter of Mr Horner Walters

Gleanings from BNA

Yorkshire Post 10th March 1869
A report on an election petition presented against the return of Sir Henry Edwards, Bart. and Capt. Kennard in an election at Beverley. This a very long report about election irregularites including votes being bought. It includes mention of Horner Walters as one of many witnesses:

Quote
Horner Walters had got 17s. 6d. from the Conservative side at the municipal election. Mr Richmond had remarked to him some time after the receipt of the money "perhaps we shall want you again for the election" but did not say what election he meant.
