my mother was born in January 1918. Her birth certificate gives her address as 8 Crossland Avenue, Holland Street. Does this street still exist, or does anyone remember it? I have one photograph of mum which appears to be a street photograph, presumably of Holland Street. We guess it was taken about 1920-ish. From the appearance of the kids it would seem to be a very poor district. I will try to attach the photo to this message, but I'm not very good with the computer, so I may need to come back for help. It would be good to identify any of the kids in the picture!

Sorry - couldn't work out how to attach the photo. There's an arrow saying attachments at the bottom of this message, but no clue as to how to attach anything.I'm probably doing something stupid, so any help appreciated.

You can't do attachments on "Lookup" threads. Suggest you ask the Moderator to move this to the normal Yorkshire (East Riding & York). ;)

Holland Street is in the SE corner of this map revised 1926:

I guess the avenues were the small footpaths between rows of houses, similar to the short "avenue" roads nearby. Hull had a reputation for having some of the smallest terraced houses in the country.

Crossland Avenue, Holland Street is still there. If you are a Google streetview user you can set yourself up in Holland Street and look along it.

A HULL STREET'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE SERVICES.
Crossland Avenue, Holland Street, Hull, is believed to have created a record for the proportion of the men to the houses in the street who have joined the services. There are eighteen houses in the street, three of which are occupied by widows. In another, the only available man was rejected.
The remaining fourteen houses have provided fifteen men for service, including one serving on a mine-sweeper. Of the rest, some are at the front, and the others in various parts of the country.

Just looking at 8 Crossland Avenue, Holland Street in the 1921 census: I can't give full details but the family there is called Cousen and consists of parents and a ~2 year old son; your family must have left by then?
