Behn- West Derby/ Germany

Does this point to sugar refining, I wonder?

I have basic details of John / John Frederick / Stanley, sugar workers / brokers, 1827 through to 1911, in Liverpool, on my database, and also much earlier references to Jurgen Behn 1721 and J J Behn 1799, both Hamburg.
Your Ludwig emigrating to Surinam from Hamburg may be connected, sugar being the main produce of Surinam since 1700, and Hamburg the centre of German sugar refining at the time.

Thanks for the replies, as the rest of the family were mainly involved in the sugar industry it would make sense that this happened in Surinam as well,

Suriname was a Dutch Colony from the late 17th Century.
Have you tried Dutch records?

I looked online at some Dutch genealogy sites but they were mainly for the Netherlands and not any colonies
