Post by: ezyryder on Wednesday 13 March 24 10:59 GMT (UK)
Hi
I am looking for any information on the above, I have found on the English Boatwright Family Genealogy site that Mary Ann Fuller and I quote " Mary Ann is said to have been the illegitimate daughter of a Duke who paid her maintenance for life. It was said, her Father was William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire."  Her "Father is listed as Joseph Boatwright and Mother Sarah" It was known the Duke had other illegitimate children and two are listed . Is this one a cover up as I am sure went on in days gone by.
I have no clue on where to start and wonder if anyone could do some lookups to help me out.
My wife is a Boatwright and we have in the tree Joseph and Sarah with Mary Ann as the Daughter. we would really like to find out more.
Thanks

Dave

Could you please give a link to this

It's here:
http://www.boatwrightgenealogy.com/englandfamily2.4.html

Gives no source for Mary supposedly "being the illegimitate daughter of a Duke who paid her maintenance for life." It claims that "her father was William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire."  ::)

OP could always try contacting the site owner; his email is at the bottom of the web page. Having said that, it doesn't appear he has been active on the site for a while.

Thank you Queenie.
It gives the same baptism date as I have given with parents William Fuller and Sarah but no mention of the fact that Sarah Heat had married a William Fuller in Hartfield prior to that.

As you say no evidence of her supposed illegitimacy.

The image of William Fullers marriage at Hartfield is on familysearch
William Fuller was of Withyam and Sarah Heat of the parish (Hartfield). One of the witnesses was Samuel Heat.

Mary Ann's baptism image is also there

ADDED William Fullers burial gives his age as 38, image also on familysearch

That was a good find Jon  :)

Maybe the clergy was just emphasising the fact that Harriet was born out of wedlock, I have seen entries like that before when it has been the child of the groom.

Hopefully when ezyryder is back on next they will give us some feedback on what has been found for them.  ;D

Hi All
Firstly a thank you to all who have replied, I am no further into discovering if Mary Ann Fuller was the child of William Cavendish, I have since emailed the author of the Boatwright Tree but no reply as yet.
I have some possible additional information :-

William Fuller b.1776  d.1846  Married Sarah Heath b.1776 d.1860 Married 6/05/1799

William Fuller age 70 at death
Sarah Heath age 84 at death

Sarah Heath could have married again on 21/06/1789 to Joseph Turner b.1771.  d.1805. age 61 at death.
Records found on Ancestry.

It would appear from parish registers that Mary Ann's parents were married when she was conceived.  It would certainly be interesting to know where that tale originates.

Where were William and Sarah in 1841  :-\

Records of Hartfield and adjoining parishes seem to infer that there were many families with the surname Heat, no 'h' on the end  :-\

There are two baptisms in Withyham for a Sarah Heat 1773 & 1776, perhaps it was the one of those that married Joseph Turner
