Title: NEALE and GOODCHILD families of White Waltham
Post by: Australia Bound on Tuesday 12 March 24 22:02 GMT (UK)
Hello there,

Thomas Neale and Eliza Goodchild were married in 1799 at White Waltham, Berkshire.

I know they had a daughter, Lucy, born in 1818.

Any assistance to find supporting records of:
    -  other children of Thomas and Eliza
    -  death/buriel records of Thomas and Eliza
    -  parent records of Thomas and Eliza.

I contacted the parish at White Waltham and they informed me that all their records were in the Berkshire Records Office.

I am in Australia, so if anyone is going to the office to visit and can spare a little more time to try to find anything on the NEAlE and GOODCHILD family of White Waltham I would be very appreciative.

Thank you for your time.

Yes I have checked Family Search, and only found the marriage record of Thomas and Eliza.

Nothing else.

Thank you, AB

Many public trees on Ancestry say daughter Lucy was born in Buckinghamshire (the 1839 immigration record does look like "Buck shire" to me, though it could be "Berkshire"). For anyone else looking - father Thomas NEALE is described as a sawyer on this record.

Have you found Lucy's baptism?

In the 1841 census for White Waltham I can only see a William NEALE (60, ag lab), and a Mary NEALE (45) with presumably children William (13) and Elizabeth (11) at Littlewick Green.

There is a report of a Thomas NEALE committed to the County Gaol for housebreaking at White Waltham in 1832.
Saturday,  Feb. 11, 1832
Publication: Berkshire Chronicle

Will try to find some more details.

"Thomas Neale, aged 29, sawyer, charged with having, on the night of the 28th January, broken and entered the dwelling- house of Thomas Wells, at White Waltham, and stolen therefrom seven quarts of beer."
Monday,  Feb. 20, 1832
Publication: Reading Mercury

So not Lucy's father, but coincidnece of names, occupation and location, could be another son? Would need to do more research.

Hi,
This is only a small point but;
Willam Barefoot & Lucy Goodchild were married in Hurley - St.Mary an adjacent parish to White Waltham, Shottesbrooke & Waltham St.Lawrence - per the records from the Berks FHS.

Oh my gosh.

This is amazing.

So much for me to dig into and follow up on.

Thank you so very much for all your assistance.

Has anybody found any details of death or burial records for Thomas Neale and his wife Eliza or who their respective parents were?

Thank you once again for all your help.

They are at "Holyport", Bray in 1851:

So the Mary (45) and children William and Elizabeth in White Waltham in 1841 mentioned in reply #2 would be this family.

This Thomas NEALE was again in trouble with the law in 1843. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. I'm not sure yet if he actually went, or if his sentence was again changed, or if he managed to return to England (unusual, but not impossible), since he appears in the 1851 census. The mention of his original sentence in 1832 being death is confirmed on the Criminal Register.

Oh, I can't attach an image on this board.

"   THOMAS NEALE, 37 [42 on the Criminal Register], charged with stealing at Waltham St Lawrence, on the 24th of January last, about a bushel and a half of potatoes, the property of Robert Brown. It appeard in evidence that the potatoes were deposited in a grave near the prosecutor's house, and that, suspecting he was robbed, he set a man to watch, and the prisoner was apprehended with the potatoes in his possession. He was found guilty, and a previous conviction, of a burglary, (for which sentence of death was recorded against him, but afterwards commuted to 18 months' imprisonment) was put in, and found by the jury.
His LORDSHIP said, it was useless to think of extending mercy to a prisoner who had shown himself so completely hardened, and sentenced him to Seven years' Transportation."

Edward NEALE was also in trouble with the law - imprisoned for 3 months in Feb 1851 for stealing 2 ducks and 2 drakes at White Waltham, the property of Rev Henry POLE.

He is in the St Lawrence County Gaol in 1851:

With wife Ann and family in 1861 at Bray:

1871 at Bray:

1891 at Bray:

Was hoping to find him in 1841 to see who he is with, but not easy to find.

Here he is at White Waltham with the family of George BIRD, also Elizabeth NEALE (60, nurse).  :D
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQRQ-35Z

The youngest child, Louisa BIRD has mother's maiden name NEAL. So fits with the marriage of Eliza NEALE and George BIRD in 1837 that amondg found in reply #8

There is also a possibility that a son of Thomas and Eliza Neale, William, was also in trouble with the law and may have been sent to Australia.  I don’t know if it is correct.

Anther possibility is that William Neale may have been married before being sent to Australia.  I also don’t know if that is correct.

Any assistance is so greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

There is a William Neale in trouble with the law in 1848 however he is 20 years old so not the son of
Thomas and Eliza.

Transcription on FindMyPast
There is a death of a William Neale aged 59 at White Waltham  buried 8 December 1861.
The age fits but more proof needed. Perhaps the original entry has a street address.

The William Neale mentioned above married Rachel Head - widow 15 February 1829 at White Waltham

1841/1851 census 1861 census his occupation is Sawyer born Shottesbrook, the same occupation as Thomas Neale so I expect he is the son of Thomas and Elizabeth.

They don't appear to have had any children together although Rachel has children from a previous marriage.

Hi AB,

Is this the marriage you are looking for;

William Goodchild to Elizabeth Heywort 20-10-1799 White Waltham (Berks FHS records)

I can't help with  the W/Waltham baptisms as there is a big gap in the records from 1726 - 1813

Apologies, I have had to alter this post, as I found an error in my logic.

There is a WILLIAM NEALE b. abt 1801 from Berkshire who ended up in Australia (possibly as a convict) and married an ELIZABETH LAWMAN in 1847 in West Maitland, NSW, Australia.  His death records do not identify his parents' names.  However it is widely thought that this WILLIAM NEALE (b. abt 1801) and LUCY NEALE (daughter of THOMAS and ELIZABETH NEALE) were related as either a brother, cousin or uncle to LUCY.

Can anybody find a WILLIAM NEALE (b. abt 1801) who may have criminal charges that would have resulted being transported to Australia?

Also not forgetting:

Any help is really appreciated.  Thank you.

Not to be confusing but there are also these marriages in W/Waltham which may be relevant;

2-12-1788 William Goodchild - m - Beatrice Johnson

9-6-1799 Thomas Neale - m  Elizabeth Goodchild (of Shottesbrooke)

Is this the William you are referring to?

1830 sentenced to 7 years transportation Lent 1830 Berkshire - Larceny

Certificate of Freedom/New South Wales - prisoner # 30/2022
William Neale born 1803  dated 4 November 1839 arrived 1830 ship Royal Admiral, occupation Labourer.
File C39/1970 appears to refer to his Certificate of Freedom
There is one other number 35/917 last number could be 7 or 9.(35/919)
Ref: ancestry.

Neale is a common name in Berkshire.
Perhaps The Trove in Australia can give you more information.

ADDED
When he arrived it says his occupation is Ploughman and he is 27 years old.
Under family it has 3
He was tried at Reading.

The above convict William Neale was convicted for house breaking.
He was sent to E M Hungerford in Maitland

His TOL 1835 restricted him to the Maitland area.
His cert of freedom was in 1839.
