There is a photo that has just surfaced in our father's papers. I do not know the history behind it or why my father (a mad Celtic fan, who followed them from all round the world wherever his work took him to!) had kept it amongst his papers and documents.
One of the players, could connect to family. This is J P Tulley, bottom right of the photo.
I am trying to figure out which football team this could be. Also, hopefully get an indication of approximate years when this photo could have been taken which may help.
The older gentleman in middle of the top row was an Alexander Veitch Lothian, a Maths and Physic Professor in Glasgow in his later years. He was also a football player in his youth. Mention of him playing for Aberdeen FC in the 1880s https://aberdeen-fc.com/aberdeen-fc-player-profile/alexander-v-lothian.html#gsc.tab=0 He was 74 years old when he died in Glasgow in 1933.
The photography studios were a Wohlgemuth & Co. with studios in Renfield Street, Glasgow until at least early 1930s.
Not a surprise, but football is not my thing ::) Any help and comments would be appreciated.

Hi Monica. I am not a football historian but I have some information which may help or confuse you. :)
There was a Charlie Tully who played for Celtic born in Northern Ireland in 1924 and died in 1971.
Also a James Tully born in 1883 and died in 1949 who was an English footballer. Played for a variety of teams including Rochdale and Clapton Orient.
All the above comes from Wikipedia.
Wish I could read some of the other names on the bottom
Not very helpful am I and hope someone else comes along who has more knowledge of football.
Dorrie.
P.S. My family all support Hibernian going back generations. I wonder why your father supported Celtic??

Of the 2 suited gentlemen in the middle of the back row, the rightmost is A.V Lothian -a stalwart of the Aberdeen club.
See: https://www.afc.co.uk/2016/04/14/14th-april-1903/
-
He was a Glasgow man, Dorrie. Celtic was a big deal in the household, for him and brothers!
The bottom row of players's names reads:
E Smith
E A Gallacher
N Muir
J Kennedy (Captain)
E M'Gaughlin
J P Brownly
J P Tulley (Tulley can show often without the 'e' on records)
Top row:
N Stewart (Committee)
J Burns
J M'Shane
D Lynch
D F M'Bride (Hon. Secy.)
A V Lothian M.A., B. Sc.
T Mills
J Walker
G J Aitken M. A.
J Scobie (Treasurer)

Thanks, KGarrad :)
Yes, did see some details on him from the club. He looks to have had a lifetime love of football and likely still involved with clubs and the game in some way in his later years.

Maybe an email to Aberdeen FC Heritage Tust?

Did Celtic FC ever play in vertical stripes?
Green and white hoops is their standard kit.
-
I have been looking at this site www.historicalkits.co.uk/Scottish_Football_League/Scotland_Index.htm but nothing jumping out to much.
This football squad and team could have played on a lower league that is not so well recorded :-\

Could be Celtic?
They wore vertical stripes until 1904.
-
The neck is different I think. See www.historicalkits.co.uk/Scottish_Football_League/Celtic/Celtic.htm
From the photo, the neck trim colour seems to match the stripes colour. On the Celtic strip it looks to have been white.

Just a point of interest, Aberdeens nickname The Dons comes from the fact a lot of the early players where academics..
-
Aberdeen wore a striped shirt for a couple of seasons at the turn of the century however they had dark shorts. http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Scottish_Football_League/Aberdeen/Aberdeen.htm
Could it be Belfast Celtic? https://abohemiansportinglife.com/tag/belfast-celtic/

Thanks, Andrew.
I had heard of the reference to 'The Dons'. From your comment, understand the source now :)

I’ve changed my mind I can’t see it being Belfast Celtic if AV Lothian is in the photo more likely a Scottish side.
-
A thought.... could it be a team associated with where AV Lothian was a lecturer?
He looks possibly mid 40's and looking at the starched collars the photo could be 1900's . In 1891 he took a job at the Glasgow Teacher training school. They had 2 Football teams, from the University of Strathclyde archives:
https://atom.lib.strath.ac.uk/glasgow-training-college-football-club
Did G J Aitken also teach there as he has a M A? Did any of the other names become teachers?
-
Found a George Jeffrey Aitken who is a Glasgow schoolteacher in 1891 and 1901 census and has an MA. In 1935 he is in Aberdeen phone book with qualifications MA Ed B.
-
That is a good thought, fiddlerslass :)
I do have a feeling the team is likely to have been connected to the Lanarkshire area. Glasgow connections would make sense.
More digging required!

I did find a newspaper article from 1926 which said G J Aitken had been at Glasgow training college teaching for 19 years before taking the Aberdeen teaching position.
-
Quite a number of my father's family were in education. His father was a headmaster and mother a teacher....I think you are right about a possible link that way.
My father had an uncle who was called Patrick John (born 1892 in Glasgow). I have been looking at the electoral rolls and for the first time see he also seemed to be listed in these as John P. Wondering now if this could be the J P Tulley in that team shot.
Would likely explain why my father had a copy of that photo.

I'm a Hibs supporter too, and have passed the virus on to one of my sons, although the other one supports Hearts.
There's a nice story about Charlie Tully. The queen was riding through Glasgow in an open carriage and Charlie Tully was sitting beside her. A voice in the crowd was heard to say, "Who's that sitting beside Charlie?"

GJ Aitken and AV Lothian were both teachers pre-WW1 at Stow Teacher Training College (it became Jordanhill Training College in the 1920s).
Stow College had a team in the Glasgow Churches League so it is likely they helped to run its football team. Hence my best guess is that this is a photo of the Stow College team about 1910 - which fits with previous replies.
NB there was another Stow College founded in the 1930s which taught engineering and science.
