Hi,
I wonder if anyone can offer me any insight into this one:
Matthew James Smeaton born 9/8/1875 Corrales, Huelva, Spain (British subject) to Peter Smeaton & Elizabeth Morrison.
Married in Kensington, London 29/4/1899 (listed as a clerk) to Marie Amelia Jeanne Dussau
Daughter Amelie Elizabeth Eugenie Smeaton born 22/3/1900 London
I can't find them on the UK 1901 census but have found info from another tree saying that he died 10/01/1904 in Rio de Janeiro although I have no proof of this.
Any thoughts on how to get further with this line?

I have been able to track his wife, who was a French teacher, in various places in England from, 1904-1908 and 1929 onwards to her death in 1953 that you found too.
I'm not sure where I took the information from as regards to Matthews death! Was working on this a while ago and gave up so perhaps need to retrace my original steps....
The departure in 1900 to Uruguay could well be them because that would put them into the right part of the world but of course without their first names I can't prove that.
Matthew's father seemed to disappear without a trace so I was hoping if I could make some sense of what Matthew was doing in Rio maybe it would give me some pointers to his dad.

Two additional births in Huelva, Spain 1876-1880:
Charles Smeaton and Lizzie Morrison Smeaton.
Also, a Thomas Smeaton born in Huelva 1901-1905.

1901 - he's a Merchant's Clerk. 1911 - he's a Shorthand Typist. He's a boarder in 1901 and 1911.

Thanks that might possibly be the death I'm looking for for Matthew James.
Peter Smeaton and Elizabeth Morrison married 2/09/1874 in the Church of Holy Trinity, in Gibraltar so that fits with marriage notice you've found. Elizabeth's father was listed as Jose Morrison and no mention on being deceased but that doesn't really matter one way or the other. Peter was also born in Auchterarder so that also ties in that they knew one another from home. Where did you find the newspaper obits for Peter Smeaton 1915? I only have limited access with Ancestry at the moment.
Yes I found the first two children you mention along with another daughter whose birth I can't find anywhere but she too is listed as born in Corrales, Huelva and the relationship to her siblings tracks. I've not found any mention of Thomas so I'll look further into that.
Elizabeth Morrison died in 1888 in London and Peter married again in 1890 London and is at that time listed as a "merchant"on his second marriage certificate. On the 1889 marriage of Matthew, Peter was listed as a metal broker. Everything seems to connect to the Rio Tinto mining community in Huelva.

No this isn't my Peter. I'm pretty sure of his background being born 1844 Auchterarder, Perthshire to Matthew Smeaton (Smitton) and Margaret Callum.
