Title: Any significance of PI.P in baptisms book
Post by: overlandermatt on Thursday 07 March 24 09:22 GMT (UK)
I'm wondering whether the marking PI.P might mean something in the margin of a baptism record. Any ideas please?

I can't think of anything off hand but as the child is illegitimate perhaps it has something to do with that.

My thoughts were Parish Pauper or Parish to Pay? Maybe a reminder to claim for Baptism from Parish.

When and where was the baptism? If the full register can be viewed are there any other instances with notes in the margin to perhaps compare?

The baptism was in January 1834 at Stoke Damerel.

I had wondered whether there might be something related to there being no father present or illegitimacy. I would certainly imagine the mother was poor.

Thanks!

I've looked through those registers on Family Search. I think the annotation is P T P and would hazard a guess its to do with accounting rather than illegitimacy and possibly means Private To Pay/Parish to Pay so the baptism was done privately maybe as the child was not certain to live and then entered into the register later (and possibly the rites to receive her into the congregation were carried out) but still to pay for the entry.
This one is prior to the baptism you posted

has the same notation but the child was not illegimate.
There seems to be a lot of notes like this in the registers, obviously all meant something to the parish clerk at the time but I am unsure of many of them (I've seen OF on a good few and can't guess at those)

NB this is just my best guess and not writ in stone :-)

Sounds very reasonable to me.
