Title: George Gregg/Craig/Craige 4x Grt Grandfather
Post by: Candidiasia Ibberrson on Tuesday 05 March 24 09:58 GMT (UK)
My cousin and myself are trying to find any information on our 4x Great Grandfather.

He is the father of Robert baptised 3rd June 1827at Wath Upon Dearne, Yorkshire.  His baptism shows father George Gregg and Mother Mary.

There is a George Craig buried at Handsworth 7 April 1840 age 41.  We cannot find a death on GRO
George was not on the 1841 census.

On Roberts Marraige to Ann Walker: Robert Gregg, age 23, Batchelor, Occupation Miner. Place of Residence Lord Street. Father George Gregg a Miner.  Witnesses: Joseph Walker and Harriet Walker

Can anyone help us.  Thanks

1851 has Robert living next door to his mother - his birthplace is shown as Pointon Cheshire & further census entries confirm Cheshire as his birthplace

Brother Benjamin was born 1835/36 so George could have died before 1.7.1837 when Civil Reg was introduced.

1841 entry was indexed as Ruth Gragg & a few later census entries have been corrected from Craig/Craige etc

Wife is Hannah on census entries but childrens births confirm her maiden name was Walker

The informant William Clayton could be a work colleague or neighbour of George.

This might be William in the 1841 census. Residence is Intake.

For what it's worth here are three baptisms at Four Lane Ends:

1831 - Charles Grieg  (parents: George & Marianna)
1836 - Benjamin Gregg  (parents: George & Mary)
1851 - Mary Gregg  (parents: Robert & Hannah)

Does that mean it could be George Gregg my 4ht Great Grandfather.

George married Mary Hargreave on the 5 Jan 1818, Note his surname was Craige on the marriage record.     Film Number 990889 Handsworth

There are several trees on Ancestry.  That have differnet fathers for George.

One option is Samuel Gregg and Mary.

Other Option is Robert Gregg and Mother surname Oliver

I have contacted these trees to find out what evidence they have.  Is there a way I can find out which is correct.

Thanks
