Title: Upcoming changes to tools at AncestryDNA
Post by: AnotherDay on Saturday 02 March 24 02:09 GMT (UK)
Lots of changes coming to the AncestryDNA tools - some need a sub/membership, some need ProTools...

Thanks for posting that, to be honest it doesn't actually look like many new features (other than the enhanced shared matches view), the rest are just really minor tweaks to how you get to or see existing features.
The new shared matches view, looks to be a great additional benefit, the MyHeritage version, has been very useful in helping to identify the connections).

Very welcome changes.

I did note that an extra subscription will be required, but that is not unexpected.

Still the single best improvement that Ancestry could make is for the DNA Match name to be their Full Birth Name and not one like “sandij145” which coupled with no tree has very little value other than bulking up shared match list

It is up to people who do the test if they want to share that, that is why the option to only use a username is available.

It is a wrong option

If all they want is their Ethnicity, that is fine.

What Ancestry should have is a check box to share their DNA, defaults to Not Share.

If they choose to share then their true Birth Name should be displayed.

Why do I want to see thousands of DNA matches that are unrecognisable?

They are just clogging up my Match list.

A person can choose an anonymous username but still have a private tree which is linked and will link common ancestors, or just a tree with their own name and any living forebears blanked as usual.

Yet we still get thousands of useless DNA matches

It is a rubbish system

The sooner, the better. Knowing how many centimorgans shared matches share with each other will be of enormous benefit!
I hope we don't have to wait until the summer for this.

Thanks for the heads-up on this. What is a ProTools membership? I could not find anything on Ancestry Help.

Pro Tools was rolled out late in 2023, but apparently only to people with an Ancestry dot com account (i.e. people they think live in the USA). It costs $US10 a month.

Ancestry keeps saying one needs a family history membership/subscription to be eligible to subscribe to Pro Tools. One might, therefore, assume this means Pro Tools can't be added to an AncestryDNA Plus membership/subscription (also rolled out in recent months) - BUT...Ancestry hasn't specifically said this.

An Ancestry family history membership/subscription costs a lot of money. An AncestryDNA Plus membership/subscription is pretty cheap.

In addition, Ancestry is about to restructure its membership/subscription plans - apparently doing away with the regional options.

Many Thanks, AnotherDay, for the clarification. As I live in UK I now realise why I have never heard of it. I have a world-wide subscription. I will be pretty miffed if I have to shell out more for so-called ProTools.

It looks as if this might be the new Ancestry membership/subscription regime (but you'll probably need to be logged out of Ancestry to see the details).

https://www.ancestry.com/offers/subscribe

Individual - Access all USA & international records on Ancestry
[$US24.99 by the month or $US21.99 per month (if you sign up for 6 months)]

Family – Access all USA & international records on Ancestry + 4 additional accounts
[$US39.99 by the month or $US32.99 per month (if you sign up for 6 months)]

Family Premier – All records on Ancestry, Fold3, Newspapers dot com, Publisher Extra + 4 additional accounts
[$US59.99 by the month or $US49.99 per month (if you sign up for 6 months)]

Interesting. I'll wait and see then decide. I'd pay more for a chromosome browser. I can hardly believe they have not thought of that one themselves. Mystery to me why they have not brought one out - at additional cost of course. :D

Just been on Chat with Ancestry, the staff do not know when the Roll Out will be.

Just USA members have Pro Tools access at present, which personally I do not mind, best to let them be the Beta Testers.

Chat is with either a bot, that rarely knows much, or a CSR, who knows what a CSR in Ancestry's foreign customer service department would know.

I mostly wanted to make sure I had the most up to date information.   Likely the date is up to IT.   I take it that video someone posted IS the only word on it ?

I wonder if it's even true?

I signed up to Pro Tools for a month to see if it was any good.  You just need to log in with your UK account on the dot com website.  It will leave you log in and have it.

I did not see it worth the money, as there are other tools like FTAnalyser that will do the same and for free.

I found the Ancestry tool tried to say I had duplicate entries on my tree, even though they were not duplicates.  They were simular names with silular DOB.

I fed back to Ancestry what I felt of their Pro Tools and they did refund me the $10. which was around £7.

Ancestry Pro Tools requires an active Ancestry family history membership. Pro Tools provides access to advanced family history tools, including:

Tree Checker: Find potential duplicates and possible errors in your tree.
Charts and Reports: Create and share detailed family histories.
Advanced Filters: Search, group, and sort people in your tree using key details beyond names.
Map Views: See where people in your tree lived in relation to one another.

Access to paid records, other members’ family trees, and premium DNA features are not included.
.
.
.
For me the above is not worth it, my genealogy family tree software does this.

It is the Gedmatch DNA tools that Ancestry needs and vastly better search filtering tools.

When was this, I think they have just added several new features to it?

I just logged into USA site this morning but cannot see any new features listed in the ProTools subscription page. Have you subscribed?

No not yet. I checked the original video from Ancestry, and they say the new features will be coming in the first half of 2024, so probably haven't been added yet. For ProTools, they will be

https://youtu.be/Q7QAJjYtXLU?t=460

1. You will be able to see how much your shared matches share with other matches, which will be very useful (and of course already possible in the other sites)
2. Ability to group all shared matches into one group with one click.
3. Ability to sort shared matches by matches' closest matches.
4. Highlight matches that have triangulated shared segments (also already possible in the other sites)

Guess I will just have to be patient then. Sigh.

I think that most useful aspect of these features (apart from the much wished-for and still not happening chromosome browser) is seeing what relationship a shared match has with other matches you both have in common. It's one of the two features I most like about MyHeritage (the other being the chromosome browser of course!)

Unfortunately, I have relatively few matches on other sites than Ancestry so the whole DNA hunt experience is proving more than a little frustrating  ;D

I'm also looking forward to seeing the relationship between my shared matches like MH does, would be really useful to me as well.

The one minor change I keep suggesting to them is on the main list page of all matches, just to show the number of shared matches I have with each. That way I can tell straight away that if they have no matches and no tree I can give them a coloured dot for 'no tree no matches' and just move on.

I'd not thought of that but it would certainly be a good idea!
