Title: Gold nugget - Need more details about Apprenticeship Books in 1714
Post by: lepicard on Friday 01 March 24 16:06 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I think I found a "gold nugget"
On Ancestry I can read ligne 4 the text....
Anth. SOULARD was apprentice , son of Ste (Stephen???) SOULARD merchant .
Do you think I can find out more?
My ancestor was Antonin (in French) son of Stephen. Antonin was born in France in 1700.
His father Stephen lived for a couple of years in London.
Maybe his son was sent to England ?????

UK, Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures, 1710-1811

I am replying to this because no-one else has, to suggest there may be records held by the Goldsmiths' Company of London.

I am not knowledgable about the London companies, but what caught my eye was line 3 above your entry, for a scissorsmith in Attercliffe, which is two miles from Sheffield.  There, trades were controlled by the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire.  Records of apprentices are published including this one, with the additional information of the date when the apprentice became a freeman.

So, it's worth trying the Goldsmiths.

Thanks.
I'm sure there is something promising about this register.

Try  https://www.clockmakers.org/

Do Lemoyne and Lafon both suggest French descent of the masters?

Hi
There is a Stephen Soulard on the lad tax records for London in 1692 at St Peter le Poer
Also in the parish
Stephen Sollart buried 8.9.1687 in the vault
Mrs Soullard buried 25th May 1694 in the vault.

Just in case they fit
