Found Wm Caldwell in register of Apprentice's Indentures for Merchant Navy UK. 
Indentured for 4 yrs on 22 Oct 1880 at age of 18 years in Glasgow to Thos. Law & Co.

I've posted this on the other thread about Ivy Isobel Caldwell too.

I have been online chatting to the person who has built this tree about Wm Caldwell born 1862 Glasgow, out of curiosity and to help someone else a while ago. He continues to add to it.

He is very thorough and verifies everything he can. And does not lift info from other trees without checking the details properly!

Capt. William Caldwell, of Liverpool, England, a member of the English navy, accompanied by his wife, is a guest of Auditor and his wife Mrs John M Brown.

Where it states navy, presumably merchant navy to match his certs stating Merchant service.
