Title: William Abraham Lindo 1810
Post by: yorkshirerose28 on Thursday 22 February 24 16:24 GMT (UK)
I am  searching for any information on William Abraham Lindo .
I know that he was born in the west indies circa 1810 and by 1842
he was living in London and working as a wine merchant .

I know that he married a Maria Elizabeth Taylor .They had a daughter also
called Maria Elizabeth .

I know nothing about his life in the west indies or who his parents where .Its believed that the
family might have been Sephardic jews ?

Any Information would be gratefully appreciated

I know this isn’t your WA Lindo but it’s quite an unusual name so wondered if there may be a family connection

He married Maria in 1844. Have you bought the marriage cert to establish his fathers name?

He could have a connection to the Lindo family, who were West India merchants. Namely Ephraim Lindo and older brother Benjamin Lindo. They have Sephardi community ties, as well.

Their father was Elias Lindo, a major international merchant based out of London.

After his death his wife Maria was a "mangler" not an occupation for someone from a well to do family.

Maria was buried 12 January 1890 age 67 at Lambeth.

There are a few newspaper reports in 1811 mentioning David Arbarbanel Lindo and the West Indies.  I can't read them to see what they say

he is noted on Maria Elizabeth's marriage certificate as wine merchant. However, on the census entries where he will have given the information, he is a wine cellarman.

There are many articles at BNA mentioning the name Lindo in the Barbados Mercury – 14 in 1780-89 alone. Names that I see in that period are Abraham, David,  and several for Messrs Lindo and Belinsante, (who seem to be Abraham Lindo and Sarah Belinsante?). The articles are mostly concerned with land sales and slaves, for example:

Barbados Mercury, 8 November 1783
Quote
ALL persons whatever, are hereby forewarned and desired not to hire or employ one or any of the following slaves, to wit, Sam Thorne, Johnny Parsons, Tommy Parsons, Quaw, Tom, Joe and Coyer, mulatto and Negro carpenters; Dick, Jefferey, Sussex, Sammy, Richard and Sampson, negro masons; Ned and Charles, negro glaziers and painters; Whitsuntide and Polidore, negro coopers; without an agreement made with the subscriber, Mr Griffin Bascomb, or any other chief overseer upon his plantation, or Mr David Lindo, in Bridgetown; as the law will otherwise be enforced against employees contradictory to this advertisement.
Abraham Lindo, Junior. November 1

Elias Lindo's Jewish firm Lindo and Noble had a business community established on St. Eustatius and Barbados in the late 18th century.

The book Jews, Slaves and the Slave Trade by Eli Faber, 1998,  has a fair bit of detail about the Lindo slave traders. It is available at archive.org
