This is what we know:
Married Dorothy Hill Nicholls, Cheshire, 1941.
Twin sons born Flintshire, 1947
3rd son born Scotland, 1950
Richard passed, age 68, in 1985, Dunoon, Scotland, MMN, McKenzie
Unable to find a birth for him or on 1921 census or 1939 register.
Could he have changed his name or have been adopted?
-
Do you have his marriage certificate? If so what details does it give re his father? Does it give his age?
-
Don't have the marriage cert. Age at death, 68, putting his birth around 1917. There are a few in 1917, but I have checked them all. Not him.
-
A newspaper report of his marriage states that was was ‘of Gloucester’, if that’s of any help.
-
Thanks, Jen. I did look at the Cheltenham birth which lists parent as Addis. Would need to look at the birth cert.
-
You would need to get the 1941 marriage certificate to progress this.
-
Doesn't his death cert name his parents?
-
A Richard Arthur McKenzie was b Cheshire 1918 mmn Houghton
-
There is mention in the London Gazette Nov 1943 of Private Richard Anthony ADDIS ( NB there is a person of the same name born Gloucestershire)

He died in Scotland so his death cert is the logical way forward to see what info it gives re parentage. It will at least show his mothers christian name as it's showing her maiden name
-
Thank you all for your assistance with this search. I have ordered a pdf of the Cheltenham birth. I think the Newspaper links in 1941 & 1943 would suggest that the Cheltenham birth is the correct one. I will post more when I receive the pdf.

Unfortunately my computer went down last night having just downloaded the digital image of the Richard Addis born 1917 Cheltenham.
Born 9th January 1917, 1 St Albans Villas, Hewlett Road. Mother Mary Addis, Nurse(Domestic) Her abode Oaklands, Ross.
This would tie in with the birth of a Mary Lea Addis born 1895 Ross. Her father William Henry Addis & Maria Addis nee' Lea.
1911 census finds Mary Lea Addis in a school in Llandaff, her father in 1911 in Bridstow(as below)

Hi Softly Softly. Thanks for that. I assume no father mentioned. Was it a mother & baby home? I can only assume that the child was brought up by another family.
-
Found this in newspaper dated 21st June 1917. Had to look up "accouchment" :), birth, delivery.
SS
added--no father recorded
-
Thanks again. On his death record, his MMN was listed as McKenzie which must have been the mother that raised him. Legal adoption did not come in until 1926 in England.
-
Various mentions of Oaklands Cottages, Bridstow, Ross-on-Wye giving a postcode of HR9 6QQ.

On his death record, his MMN was listed as McKenzie
I note there has been no comment to my suggestion that obtaining an actual copy of his death cert may provide relevant info. At least a christian name for his mother should be there
-
I agree Carole, with such a late death one needs to order the actual certificate as no image available.

Replies 9 & 12 refer. I would have thought it would be the first step to take before any other enquiries - particularly with so little info
-
His son, whom I am researching for, cannot find his death cert & he thinks the MMN was def. for the possible foster mother. He never new who his birth mother was.

Thanks DCB. I am now in the process of searching further back with the Addis line.
Mary Lea Addis was the daughter of Wm Henry Addis 1861-1949 & Emily Mary Lea 1868-1942.
I have traced the Addis line back to the 1700's but I am struggling with the Lea line.
Emily Mary Lea's mother was Olive or Olivia Andrews. In the 1871 census, Olivia Lea is a widow living with her daughter.
The only marriage I can find in Hereford is to a Richard Hill & cannot find a death for a Richard Hill or Lea.

Have you the £2.50 digital image for Emily Mary Lea birth, it should note a fathers name and occupation.

Good find SS. Thanks a lot. That looks like the correct ones.
-
I wonder if the 1871 digital death image might name the informant as Olive/Oliva.
Added: in 1871 census Olives occupation is noted as Landed Property, sounds like she inherited part of the farmlands, Alfred Lea is noted as a Student & Landowner in 1871.
Thomas Lea also left a will. Probate on Ancestry.

Thanks Ladyhawk. Had most of that but not in great detail.
