Hi there. I'm researching a mystery that has just come to light about an ancestor of mine.
Hugo Walton King. Born 1853 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, United Kingdom.
For years now we've had him on our scant records as having died 1872 at the young age of 18. No records were available to back this up so it was just accepted. However a snippet of information has come to light suggesting he either became a seaman or worked his passage over to Australia. The death date would either refer to date leaving the UK or the time he stepped onto Australian soil and set up a new life. I know Australia is a huge country and my only guide would be a regular sailing from Liverpool. Does any member know of or have in their family details of such a person? One other thing that may help is the fact that his father and grandfather were cabinet makers and certainly after the death of his father in 1865 the business closed and furniture items sold. We know a cabinet made in the style of Chippendale was indeed purchased at a later date by someone in Australia- person unknown.

For the information of Jardiner, (in case you aren't aware of Australian records) these articles are from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. So births, deaths and marriage records are held in Victoria.

There is a record of Hugo W KING aged 18 in 1871 indentured as an apprentice in the Merchant Navy. A note on his record says he deserted at Melbourne 24 Dec 1872.
"Deserted 'Batterdale' 65857 at Melbourne 24.12.72 Ind recd with CC2 on 27.3.73 - Ran 2.12.72 per C 9.73"
(not sure what all the abbreviations mean)

There is also a W H KING on a passenger list from Victoria to New Zealand via Hobart aged 28, departing in August 1881. - A Possibility.
Though there is a Hugo KING fined in March 1884 in Fitzroy, Melbourne. I think the records says for "truancy of Edward".

The Hugo KING fined for his son's truancy is probably this Hugo KOENIG who married Margaret CARROLL in 1872 in Victoria. Margaret's death notice here mentions sons Edward, James and Victor.

I had a look at this one and he was a boot -finisher living in Fitzroy from 1880 to 1883.
His son (one of them) Victor enlisted WW2 and was born at Queenstown Victoria round 1895.
There was a Hugo KING in Queenstown who struck gold at Yow Yow mine.
All an interesting story, but , as you say Maddy. Wrong man.

So the last good sighting is still the advertisement from Mr Little in 1879 cited above.

Yes. They waited almost 10 years to finalise his estate in England .
He was apparently last heard of in 1872.
Mr LITTLE of Collingwood, mentioned in the other news clip, was likely John Moore LITTLE.
He and his family were from the Cumberland region of England and may have been associates
There is nothing to indicate that Hugo ever responded to the advertisement.
Or maybe he collected it and headed to NZ as found by Maddy!

difficult with just initials, there are quite a few possibilities for "H KING"

Hi folks Thanks for all your info. It has certainly made interesting reading and has added to the many unanswered questions surrounding my ancestors. I'll follow all up as research has shown me they all tried their hands at anything to survive. From labourers to engineers, from pub owners to owning awning manufacturers, from cabinet makers to glass manufacturers.
