Hi
Is anyone able to help me figure out where my family lived at their time of marriage.
James Henry Hampson married Margaret Ellen Tansey address 3 & 6 Nelson Place church St Thomas Ardwick 7th October 1916
I am trying to figure out where Nelson Place was and if there are any old pictures of the area
Thank you

On this list of Manchester Streets Nelson Place is linked to Nelson Steet, Ardwick

It is probably on the map sheet outlined here, or the one to the south of it. Choose the 1915-16 revision from the RH side.

This district is packed with terraced houses. Does Nelson Street/Place appear in 1911/1921 census? Check names of neighbouring streets, and description of the enumeration district at the beginning of the section in 1901.
It is possible there are photos in city slum clearance files later.
Added: Kay99 now has the street on an earlier edition. This is south of Ardwick; Chorlton on Medlock district, near the Royal Infirmary later.

I agree that trying to find both Nelson Street and Nelson Place in the census is a good idea.
This might not be the case with Nelson Place, but sometimes an address which sounds like a street name can actually be a row of houses. I’ve been caught out in the past looking for a “terrace” which has turned out to be in a row of terraced houses on a street with a different name.
It may not be the case for a “Place” but I just thought to mention it in case.

In the 1939 Register nos. 1-10 Nelson Place are recorded in the sequence:
Higher Ardwick
Camplin Street
Wellington Street
NELSON PLACE
Nelson Street
Walkers Place
Jerold Street
Fairhurst Street
Here is a link to a view of the 1932 25 inch map showing that area. Nelson Place is a short cul-de-sac running south at the west end of Nelson Street...

...and here is a link to a side-by-side view showing where it was (it isn't labelled on the old map but it's clearly represented)

Those are football pitches (Manchester Powerleague) and it seems that Nelson Place was where the yard to the east of the pitches is now. That seems to be Scott Pallets so what you can see are stacks of pallets.
The last newspaper reference to Nelson Place that I can find was in 1954.

Things are no better today!
I live in a Terrace of 24 houses; Google Maps points me to a different terrace some 200 yards away!
Taxis and IOM Post have no difficulty with my address?
Address finder software on many websites (insurance for example) also have no problems.
But it doesn't appear on any maps.

So it is in Ardwick, not the other Nelson Street in Chorlton on Medlock.

Here it is, named, in an 1889 survey at 1:500. There is a golden rule about OS maps that all the most interesting places are at the join of two sheets!

Those terraces within streets are usually named on this series, but only issued once, usually.

Hi
Thank you everyone with the help. I was along the right lines looking for a connection with Nelson street and the possiblity of it being a row of houses but just couldn't locate.
thanks kelly
