On my grandmothers birth certificate her father is named as James Walker.
The 1891 census (RG12/2437 Aston Manor district 62) states born Scotland.
I know this is him because he was living as a lodger with Elizabeth Lyndon and her family. Their first child was born in 1891. I can find no marriage certificate.
On the 1901 census (RG13/2847 All Saints district 11) he states born Scotland Edinburgh.
On the 1911 census (Ladywood 384/19/18007) he states born Scotland NB
On the 1921 census (384/1/37) he states born Scotland Clackmannanshire
He died in 1928.
Can anyone please suggest where I should start researching for his birth as there are different locations given on the census's.

Hello
You can search the Scottish birth indexes at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for free. This includes the statutory records from 1855, and the pre-1855 parish records - although there will be people missing from the pre-1855 records as most of these records on ScotlandsPeople were held by the Church of Scotland and there was no legal requirement to register births before 1855.
James Walker is likely a very common name in Scotland. Do you have any information on who his parents were from his marriage or death record, as the Scottish birth indexes often include the child's mother's maiden name - this would help narrow down the potential birth options and his parents' details - names, occupations etc - would also perhaps locate him in any Scottish censuses before he went to England.
Best wishes
Rockford
[edited as I see you haven't found a marriage entry]

Can anyone please suggest where I should start researching for his birth as there are different locations given on the census
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the place to go.
How old was he in each of those census records?
And what was his occupation?
Where are All Saints (there seem to be several in England) and Ladywood, and where is '384' in 1921?
Did he have more than one child with Elizabeth Lyndon, and what were the names and birth years of all their children?
There were 5 births of James Walkers in Clackmannanshire between 1855 and 1870.
29 February 1856, father Thomas, mother's maiden surname Helen Sorley. This James died in Edinburgh in 1906, so he can be eliminated from your search.
29 January 1859, illegitimate, mmn Ann Walker
24 September 1859, father Thomas, mmn Catherine Wright. This child died in 1860 so he can be eliminated from your search.
30 July 1860 mmn father William, mmn Mary Watson
17 September 1867, father James, mmn Christina Howieson
Assuming that the 1921 census is correct, that leaves three possibles. In many cases the Scottish death indexes state the maiden surname of the deceased's mother, but there can be several reasons why this information is missing, including
- the informant of the death may not have known the maiden name of the deceased's mother
- the mother's maiden name is on the certificate but has not yet been added to the index (the adding of mothers' maiden surnames to the index is an ongoing project)
If, however, the 1901 is correct and he was born in Edinburgh, finding him is going to be much more difficult as there were 55 births of James Walkers in Edinburgh between 1855 and 1870.
Unfortunately English death certificates do not record the names of the parents of the deceased. English marriage certificates give the names of the fathers of the couple, but not their mothers' names. In the absence of any marriage certificate, there is therefore no way of using English certificates to trace James Walker's origins.

If he was 44 in 1911, that implies that he was born 1866/1867. Does this tally with his age in the other censuses?
I see that the children listed in 1911 were George, Bella, Florrie, Katie and Alec.
George is said to be 17, which means he was born in 1893/1894. What was the name of the child born in 1891?
What were the given names of Elizabeth Lyndon's parents?

1891 census James gives his age as 31 Iron Moulder
1901 39 Iron Moulder
1911 44 Iron Moulder
1921. 58 Labourer
So he was pretty inconsistent when he gave his age. Not helpful if trying to pin him down!
1891 suggests DoB 1859/1860
1901 suggests 1861/1862
1911 suggests 1866/1867
1921 suggests 1862/1863
And the names of his children don't seem to hold any obvious clues either :(

Not sure what the relevance of that is, but Jane Calvert Walker, aged 0, mmn Calvert, died in Dundee in 1861. Another Jane Calvert Walker, mmn Calvert, was born in 1864, and died in 1866 in Tradeston. A third Jane Calvert Walker, mmn Calvert, was born in Tradeston in 1866. Tradeston is in Glasgow. Parents of all three were Joseph Walker and Jean Calvert.
Sarah Walker b 1855 in Sunderland was the daughter of John Walker and Mary Ann Calvert.

Thank you again for your replies, so helpful. I have found a James Walker on the 1881 census in Sandiacre Derbyshire aged 20, a moulder born Scotland. I am puzzled to why he gave different locations in Scotland. I am going to continue researching with the hints you have given me.
