Hello,
I'm trying to trace back my family history on the Bailey side and seem to get stuck at Samuel Abel Bailey and would appreciate any help finding Samuel's parents.
I know Samuel Abel Bailey was born in 1865 in Leek Staffordshire and married Emily Bailey (born Nixon) in Feb 1 1892 @ All Saint's Church, Leek, Staffordshire, England. He died in 1947.
A bit of background:
Samuel and Emily had a son Alfred Abel Bailey born 6 Feb 1896 in Manchester, Lancashire. Alfred married Nellie Bailey (born Nesbitt) in Dec 18 1920 @ St Aidan, Bradford, Lancashire, England.
Alfred and Nellie had a son Alan Sidney Bailey who is my grandfather and was born 1932 in England. Alan moved to New Zealand and married my grandmother Jean Molly Bailey (born McLean) who then had my father Robert Alan Bailey.
I'm trying to trace my family history back but seem to get no results once I get to Samuel Abel Bailey.

From GRO:
BAILEY, SAMUEL ABEL (Mother's Maiden Name) -
GRO Reference: 1865 J Quarter in LEEK Volume 06B Page 272
The dash against MMN indicates no father's name on the Registration.
So, most likely an illegitimate birth?

As KGarrard has pointed out Samuel was probably born out of wedlock. I suspect his mother may have married after his birth and until he marries he may appear with a different surname. For a cost of £2.50 a digital image of his birth registration will record his mother’s name and an address as to where exactly he was born.

Samuel was born 1st March 1865 Mill Street, Leek. His mother is Harriet Bailey who registered the birth and signed with X

Just a coincidence?
1871 census Mill St Leek
Harriet Bailey age 33 silk winder married born Rushton boarding with
William Perkin39 silk winder Leek
Hannah 43 shop keeper (maiden name Devonport)
Charles Mitchell 8 son
Harriet Perkin2 daughter
Mary E Smith niece 14 silk winder
Hannah Davenport married Charles Mitchell at Rushton Spencer 4.7.1858.Father Thomas Davenport book keeper and Enoch Mitchell labourer.
She was bapt 7.1.1832 at Leek to Thomas and Anne Davenport of Lutheridge labourer.
She had a sister Harriet bapt 17.1.1836 d of Thomas and Anne Devonport at Leek of Sadden Edge? labourer.
Could she be Harriet Bailey in 1871 .
The other possibility is this
1851 Portland St Leek
Joseph Bailey 44 overlooker silk Congleton
Martha 45 stay maker Newcastle under lyme
Sarah 17 assistant
Harriet 14 silk winder
Hugh 13
Henry 11
Charles 7
Geo Henry 5
Alfred 1
But more interesting is this in Maccesfield 1881 6 Lunt Hill
Hannah Bailey widow 73 Hawker Cheshire
Zacharius Bailey 42 labourer road Maccesfield
Harriet Bailey 42 silk winder Rushton
Martha 2 granddaughter Maccesfield
In 1891 they are still there.
No sigh of Samuel Abel Bailey
What does everyone think?

1871 2884 /55/4
Abel Bailey 6yrs b Kidsgrove
He is grandson in the household of William and Hannah Hunt, Heaton, Rushton.
There is also Hannah Bailey, 7 yrs granddaughter b Northwich.

Got Samuel Abel 1871 census
1871 2 Dana Bridge
William Hunt 60 wheelwright Winch Cheshire
Hannah 54 wife ditto
Enoch 14 Heaton Staffs
Hannah Bailey granddaughter 7 Northwich Cheshire
Abel Bailey 6 grandson Kidsgrove
In 1881 Abel Bailey is a servant at Lake Farm Congleton
Marriage at Maccesfield for his parents 17.3.1856
Zacharius Bailey 17 carter s of James labourer
Harriet Hunt 18 Mill hand d of William wheelwright
wit Rachel hunt and John Hugo Bickerton.
So Samuel's parents look like they are Zacherious Bailey 1838-Dec 1896 Maccesfield parents James and Hannah
and Harriet Hunt bapt 20.11.1836 Rushton Spencer daughter of William and Hannah
You beat me to it !
