Title: Arthur J Lacey
Post by: Tessa Spencer on Friday 26 January 24 07:54 GMT (UK)
My friend is looking for her father. She thinks his name is Arthur J Lacey who lived at 2 Grayham Rd, New Malden with Edward A Lacey and Francis R Merritt in 1948. We think Arthur was a soldier, but can't find him anywhere else. He was probably born around 1926, give or take a couple of years, but no idea where. Can anybody help, please?

The Arthur J Lacey at that address in 1939 was born in 1894.

We aren’t supposed to look for living people on this site, but if he’s that one, he is clearly deceased.
There are two of the name to be seen born 1925

Look on
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl. To see mother’s maiden names

And then on the GRO  https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp
To find what the J stands for.

Why does your friend think he is the one at that address?

"She thinks his name is Arthur J Lacey"

That suggests her fathers name is not on her birth cert - so where has she got the name from after all these years?

Has she taken a DNA test?

The Kensole people in 1939 are probably related to Frances R.x(Rose)

Is there actually any connection to Arthur J (James ? ) Lacey.

Awaiting reply to my question at #2.  Little point delving any further without something more positive to go on.

Going by the birthdate for Arthur J Lacey o the 1939 register then he possibly is Arthur James Lacey born JAS 1894  Farnham.
WW1 records has  an Arthur James Lacey b 1894   occ Postman (same in 1939) PortesburyRoad Camberley.
Possible mMarriage  April 16th 1921 to Florence Alice Bishop  (still a postman)
There is a birth for an Edward A A Lacey mmn Bishop in Andover in 1921
Can t find a birth for Arthur J Lacey mmn Bishop though.

Presumably she knows who her mother is.
What makes her believe her father is Arthur J Lacey.
DOB of your friend,
What was the event in 1948 that led to that information
It's going to be difficult without more details.

Thank you all for your responses. I will go through them all shortly. In answer to your questions. Yes, she is going to do a DNA test. Such a sad story. Her mother gave her up for adoption at birth (privately), never revealing the father's name. When she was finally found, she wouldn't have anything to do with her daughter and is now deceased. The only clue to her father's identity has been an aunt who said his name was Arthur, a soldier and he lived in the same road, Grayham Rd. So we are really clutching at straws. My friend is elderly now and would love to know her origins before it is too late. Thanks again.

Having had another look at what you have found out, it looks as if Arthur Lacey is not the right man. The aunt described him as "a nice lad". He probably didn't even know about the pregnancy. Hopefully the DNA test will shed some light. Thanks again for your endeavours - it always was a long shot.

Regardless of her sad start I hope she had a good life after. 🙂
