Title: Cook Family
Post by: carol46 on Wednesday 24 January 24 13:47 GMT (UK)
Looking for some information on a James Cook born 1805 died in 1885 Alresford. He married a Elizabeth Harfield in 1823 she was also married to a William Bowley not sure if it was before James. Can't seem to find much on the Cook family. Also think there may be a connection to Basingstoke.
Thanks in advance.

How could Elizabeth have married someone else if James was alive until 1885  :-\

We cannot tell without you telling us who the family are that you are following.   Which of James children are you looking at

It's Ann Cook born 1824 Basingstoke who married John Bartlett 30th November 1850.

Thank you  :)

Marriage took place at Basingstoke father James Cook occupation Lab(ourer). Ann signed her name.

1851 gives place of birth for both of them as Basingstoke, they are living in Hackwood Road which is where the Bowleys were in 1841.   This seems to indicate that Harfield is linked.
ADDED still in Hackwood Road in 1861 - John, Ann and children

It is the James Cook that you have dying in 1885 that we have not yet linked to this family

Yes that's address I have. This is the James cook I have as Ann's father. I had. Her mother down as a Harfield though not a Tagg. I'm getting a bit confused now. Plus was Bowley married to Ann or not?

I cannot see any link at the moment to the James who died in 1885 who appears to have been married to Harriet Tagg and lived in Portsea.

Working from the Cook children listed on the 1841 census, the youngest is Mary Ann. On her baptism 1 April 1836, there is no father listed, just mother Elizabeth. So looks like James is out of the picture by this time.

I doubt that he would be in the navy and living in Basingstoke area, Portsea is nearly 50 miles away

I know that this must be unrelated but it is a coincidence that in 1841 living next door to William and Elizabeth Bowley was a James Cook age 45 blacksmith with daughter  Mary Ann who in 1843 appears to marry William Smallbone :-\
