Under  100yrs old & no death notified is the usual one

If death occurred in another country - you'll have to wait until  100yrs have elapsed since birth

Register is not updated immediately - if death is recent you will have to wait

You can apply for it to be opened - just Google 1939 register for more info

Thank you Carole , that makes sense . I noticed on FindMyPast they have the surname wrong so that would not help with opening the file , she must be over 100 years old now .

Have you checked to see if she is still alive?  You could try checking deaths to see if she is there.  The GRO deaths go up to 2021 and if you put in the Phonetically Similar Variations for the surname that may help.

Death notices in newspapers are another possibility although not everyone appears in them.

The GRO website allows you to search the indexes though you may need to register if you have not used it before

You can apply to have the entry opened.

as far as I know it's free on FindMyPast; applying to TNA or Ancestry you will need to pay a fee.

Are you looking at the entry on Ancestry or FindMyPast as they vary with redacted entries

I did look at Ancestry first but moved on to FindMyPast and found they had surname wrong and sent them a report on errors

Do you still have to provide certs to FindMyPast as proof?

I have in the past had an entry opened on FindMyPast but I did need the death certificate.

The entry I had was a female whose surname had not been amended when she married and the death registration in her married surname had probably not been linked with her record.  Her younger sisters record is still redacted (born 1925) though she died a few years ago

Just found this by googling

If you do not subscribe to Findmypast.co.uk nor to Ancestry.co.uk you should use The National Archives Freedom of Information (FOI) request form to request a search of closed records from the 1939 Register. If the record can be opened, we will send you a full transcription of the information held in the record.

This is from FindMyPast

Request a search of closed records within the 1939 Register

You need proof that the person is no longer living in order to submit your request to us. We can only accept a copy of an official death certificate (issued by the General Register Office or overseas equivalent) so please ensure you have this documentation before proceeding.

Hello , bit of a coincidence but just received the same from FindMyPast . Not sure whether to go to the trouble of buying a cert to open it , all I would gain would be the DOB shown .I think she was adopted
