Hi Mobo, Hi everybody,
Trystan has been experimenting with the way links are shown on RootsChat.
We had some feedback recently that colour-blind members couldn't recognise the links, as links.
As the aim of the site is to be accessible for everyone, or at the very least, for as many as possible, Trystan decided to try out some different schemes and wait for your feedback....
Bob
ps:
Mobo, I hope you don't mind, but too may capitals make my eyes go squiffy, so I changed your heading to lower-case :) :)
-
Bob - how come my heading isn't low case? - I posted after your edit!!
Annie
PS Oh! maybe I was writing while you were editing?? :P

Got it in one !!!

Thank goodness for an explanation - I thought my computer had gone funny.... :D

Just to say that I don't like the underlining either. Purely personal preference.
-
Personnaly, I think there is too much underlining - and it makes some bits difficult to read.
How about underlining the Topic link but have a label for the board and a small button to take you there?
I'd suggest another column for the board, but I'm not sure that would work too well at lower resolutions.
You really need a bit more whitespace between the various bits of text in the subject column to make it more readable, if you can.

;D ;D ;D
No - I don't mind at all Bob !!
Because I wear varifocals, I personaly find capitals easier to read and pick out when scrolling down Rootschats Boards, so that's why I always type my headings this way.
It's terrible when you're getting older ??? ???
:) :) :)
-
Come to think of it, that may be why I double space a census lookup because I find it easier to read ;D ;D
Old eyes need help too :)
-
:D :D
What's happened to your photo Annie - it's disappeared ?
:D :D
-
Gawd ! I can hardly read that awful dark red print it's too small, and the underlining makes it much worse. I wear varifocals too, and I can hardly read the England Counties now...it all blurrs into one big red blob.
Sorry all, but its awful.

Hi Su
Yes, it gave me a really bad headache too :o

To those of you having trouble with varifocals - I work on a computer all day and my bifocals just don't work for that distance, so I have a special pair of intermediate distance glasses. If you spend any time on a computer I recommend them.
-
I'm sorry Trystan & Bob, I don't like it either, far too messy, makes things difficult to read.
On the shorter titles it's not too bad but when you get a run of them all underlined it's 'orrible :(
On the subject of specs in case it makes a difference, I just wear 'ready readers' for Rootschatting.

In my first post, I wanted to give you "just the facts, Ma'am" without saying what I felt about it.
As it happens, I don't like it either !

Somebody must have got rid of me Mobo - 'cos I said I liked it!!!! :P :P
I can see me photo!
Annie

I must admit this underlining makes my eyes see funny things. :o
-
If you want the print bigger, hold down the control key and scroll. I used this once the wrong way and wondered why I couldn't read the small print ;D

Sorry, Trystan - here I go again - this underlining will turn me to even more drink. It's probably ok for a few minutes but when you are spending a few hours on the site constantly searching for requests - it's dreadful.
Still love you, though :-*

"I dont like it."

I agree now with Tricia having been on Rootschat for a couple of hours, my eyes are aching as well as my head :'( Will have to ration my time if we keep this underlining.
-
Being a migraine sufferer I'm not bothering at the moment - just enjoying this thread ;D
Trystan - come out, come out, wherever you are - I smell a mutiny ;) ;)

Sorry Too much for me too......Headache coming on already and only been online a few minutes. Have had a lot on PM's also from people who have been having trouble reading the Bold Red all week. It seems that particularly on the smaller screens the words all run together. Perhaps we need to know what colours people suffering colour blindness can distinguish. Is there a colour all sufferers can see or is it different for all. I wear what we call Multifocal glasses, presumably the same as your Varifocals. For someone who spends a lot of time online I and have no trouble with them for computer work until all this bold started.....Lose It! Kris :D
-
;D ;D ;D
Been watching 'Last Night of the Proms' and have just come back to the PC - still can't look at the screen for long - so it's good-night from me :'( :'( :'(
-
Is my computer set up in a different way? I don't have bold red, everything is bright blue. I can never read red on screen and I don't like the underlining either. I did turn down the contrast as everything was too bright.
I have distance glasses and reading glasses, can't use another pair for the screen so I take my glasses off

The underlining makes the screen look cluttered and confusing - and that's when I'm wide awake and sober! Much harder to pick out topics/requests I'm interested in from the rest. A definite NO from me... ??? ???

What's the bold red writing that everyone keeps mentioning ??? I don't have any.... :-\

Thank your lucky stars,then ;D ;D ;D
Tricia :o

;D ;D ;D ;D

Actually,
having said I did.nt like it,
when going up and down the topics,
the ones I have already looked at are no longer underlined -
saves time - quite a good idea really :D

Really do not like the underlining at all...the site was great as it was..
if "THEY" are bored and just looking for something to do...I have a pile of ironing they can do !!!! LEAVE WELL ALONE. Margaret
-
Hi Margaret,
I can assure you, that "THEY" are not bored, in fact "THEY" are swamped with work
and would love to be able to leave well alone.
These changes came about because between us we have all sorts of vision, ranging from perfect to impaired (colour blindness, short sightedness, etc), and "THEY" want to to set up RootsChat so that as many people as possible can use it.
I think "THEY" is doing a great job !
... and, to be honest , any impairment of RootsChat means that I am forced to leave it for a while, and finally find time to do things like ironing .
So maybe it's not such a bad thing ! ;D (but only now and then, till the ironing's done !)
-
Did anybody notice ?? Trystan has just come back on line !!
Thanks Trystan :-*
-
Hiya all,
Thanks for all your feedback. The undelining trial is now complete.
In case you were wondering, I hated the underlining, but we were trying to gauge people's reaction.
We are trying different methods to making the site more accessible to people with vision problems, especially
colour blindness (click here to see link) (http://www.tiresias.org/guidelines/colour_blindness.htm). Colour blindness affects 1 in 12 men, and 1 in 200 women.
Unfortunately it seems that in helping one group of people it is then adversely affecting another group.
If you are colour blind, then we would really appreciate it if you could get in touch with us. You can either contact any of the moderators that you usually deal with, or myself.
Thanks,
Trystan
