Title: Scottish emigration
Post by: MsLadbrook2022 on Friday 19 January 24 07:01 GMT (UK)
Hi

Thank you for taking the time to read my message. How do you know if you have found the right person who emigrated? I have come to a brick wall on a certain ancestor with a really common name after 1911 she has totally dissappeared. Please help. Thank you

Depending on lots of things ... where to and when they travelled.....

Ship passenger list can give birth place and occupation.
Census in new country may give birth details.
Marriage or death certificate, in new country can give details of parents.

Who were her parents?
When and who did she marry?
When is the last time you see her in Scotland? Is she in the 1911 census?

So her mother was Alexina Riach ( maiden name Mathers) she married Thomas Berry in 1911. Mary was with her mum in the 1911 census which was taken before she got married. Now Thomas got married again in1931 to a Elizabeth Smith. So I am thinking Mary moved abroad and changed her name?? I cannot find a death for her and she isn't on the Scottish asylum records. So I'm thinking she possibly travelled abroad ??

Have you found her on the 1921 census?

Have you looked at Thomas Berry's 1931 marriage certificate to see if it says he is a widower or divorced?

Yep no 1921 census for her. There is one for Thomas with Elizabeth. On his marriage cert with Elizabeth doesn't say widowed. The thing is Thomas was also married before Mary but got Divorced to an Isabella Robb Strachan. I'm going to have a look at Elizabeths and Thomas's certificate again tomorrow. Just to make sure.

Good morning I have had a look at Thomas's marriage in 1931 and it says widower. But I cannot find a death record for Mary Ann Berry/ Riach. Thank you

I have also looked on Mary's marriage to Thomas and it says he was a widower then. He was divorced to Isabella. So I am not sure if Mary passed away. I have a feeling she emigrated possibly to Canada?

My other predicament is there is no 1911 census for Mary A Riach or Thomas Berry. I know they both got married in September that year.

Had you tried looking for births after 1911 under Berry or Riach?
There's a record in the NRS catalogue for example:
https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=SC45%2f16%2f1916%2f16&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=mary+berry&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y (https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=SC45%2f16%2f1916%2f16&st=1&tc=y&tl=n&tn=n&tp=n&k=mary+berry&ko=a&r=&ro=s&df=&dt=&di=y)

Wondering if a wartime pregnancy to another man might have led to the couple splitting up.

I see that Mary Ann's mother died in 1916 and left a will. Have you downloaded her will as it might contain clues as to Mary Ann's whereabouts.

Did any family members sail to North America?  Could she have followed them or even gone with them?

Hi William

Yes I have looked into her mum's will and she had left everything to her son in law and granddaughter. Mary's sister passed away before her mum did. I thought it was strange as nothing was left to Mary 🤔

Kind regards

Cheryl

Hi Lisa

I have also tried looking into this but still no luck. Not even sure if she kept her married name, maiden name or even if she had changed her name completely?

Kind regards

Cheryl
