I am trying to find the parents of my 2 x great grandfather Arthur John Hughes.
He was born abt 1852 in Tasmania and died in 1916 in Gilgandra NSW.
-
HUGHES ARTHUR
J2990/1916
Father ROBERT
GILGANDRA
Do you have a marriage certificate for Arthur? Sometimes they are filled out with quiet a bit of information such as parents etc. Or do you have any other information that confirms his father as Robert?
-
Welcome to RootsChat.
As giblet says, the marriage certificate for Arthur HUGHES and Emily PEARSE in Sydney (1582/1882) could possibly contain useful information. If it does not include his parent's names, that information is still possible to find if you can ascertain where they were married (which should be on a transcription of the certificate). A useful thread about this here:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=546609.0
Unfortunately no further details on their marriage announcement:

Was there a previous marriage to Margaret FARQUHAR in 1874? Sydney (1191/1874 ). Marriage notice:

Is this your link? No birth confirmation. New South Wales marriage certificate 1874/1191 does not appear provide information of Arthur’s parents etc.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hughes-25705
The New South Wales marriage certificate records his occupation as mariner and his usual residence as Pyrmont. The usual residence of Margaret Farquhar, daughter of Robert Farquhar, was given as Hobart Town, Tasmania. Neither had been married before
-
Margaret Farquhar was born in 1852 Tasmania, father - Robert.
I wonder if there has been confusion between her and Arthur John in death notice?
-
This notice for their marriage pacifically says Hobart Town.
HUGHES—FARQUHAR.—On the 19th of December, by the Rev. G. James, at his residence, No. 3., Blythe Terrace, Kent-street, Sydney, A. J. Hughes to Margaret Farquhar, both late of Hobart Town.

There is a John Hughes birth in 1852 Tasmania
-
Hi
I have also been looking for Arthur John’s parents.
I have copies of both of his marriage certificates & his death certificate. The death certificate has his father as Robert but I am not taken that as a definite as the information is given by someone other than himself.
Arthur is my 2x great grandfather.
-
Is there any information on his marriage certificates that may provide some clues? Presumably father's name is not given, but are there witness names for example?
-
Can you please list all the information on his marriage certificates.
Can you please list all the information on his death certificate.

His death shows that he was born in Wales and had been in Australia for 40 years. You need to at least get the birth certificate of one of his children, preferably a birth that he registered himself, to see what is given as his place of birth.

I have all his children’s birth certificates & they all have his place of birth as Tasmania

I helped Jean with this query in another forum. One possible clue was the witness to Arthur's marriage to Margaret Farquhar, Catherine Elizabeth Curtis. She may have been the Catherine Elizabeth Hughes that married William Curtis in 1868 in Hobart - https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/RGD37-1-27/RGD37-1-27P94 There is a marriage notice in the Mercury newspaper - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8855814?searchTerm=catherine%20elizabeth%20hughes So this Catherine may possibly be Arthur's sister? I could find nothing about Catherine Elizabeth or William Curtis beyond their marriage? Looked in all the resources that I could think of...

I'm not certain what details would be in the 1878 marriage certificate? Some sources says details can be hit and miss in these 1860-1870s certificates? If it contained her birth place and parents then might be well on the way to solving Arthur John Hughes origins?
-
TasTyger that Mount St address is ringing a bell! I will have to try to find where I have seen it. You may just be onto something

Another possibility though probably stretching?? There was a Catherine Elizabeth Hughes born in 1850 at Carnarvon (old name for Caernarfon in Caernarfonshire, Wales https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caernarfonshire) Arthur's death certificate said he was born in Wales and his father was Robert, a soldier?
The Catherine Elizabeth Matthews who died in 1929 would have been born circa 1851? Could there have been some legitimacy to the claim of being born in Wales? There were certainly British Regiments going through Caernarfon in the 1850's? Even stationed there?
As I say long shooting but another thought?? ???
-
I'd be laying odds that Catherine Elizabeth Matthews was Arthur John's sister... I guess getting the 1878 marriage certificate would be the only way to find out and perhaps crack a solution...
-
Yes I think I will get that certificate. It seems like a good lead.

You have several birth certificates.
Can you please list all the information on each of these documents.
Please do not use UPPER CASE when doing this.
Upper case is difficult for people on this forum to use because it presents as an eye-chart/wallpaper.
Use upper case and lower case you way you see it used, and you are using, for other text.
The death certificate, 1878, will be useful for your research.
-
I do apologise for posting the certificates in upper case I didn’t realise that it’s a problem to read. I just used copy paste to post them.
I’m very new to using rootschat.
-
I am pleased that you receive this advice as it is intended...kindly advice offered to maximise your chances of using a forum to achieve the outcome wanted, by you and people on this forum.
It also ensures that people contributing here to your request for assistance in your research can use their extensive experience to best advantage.
Can you please list the information on the birth certificates.

I will post each certificate seperately.

For interest, there is a John A HUGHES, quarryman, at Saunders Lane (off Mount St), Pyrmont in 1879 in the Sydney Sands Directory. Have you any other records where he is John?

so birth reg of son Arthur Robert says Arthur John's birthplace is Wales & then Emily Beatrice is born in Hobart, Tasmania.
So confusing
-
just trying to pinpoint the time of place of birth change ;D
1874 In December 1874 bachelor Arthur a mariner, marries Margaret Farquhar. at Kent Street Sydney. He lives in Sydney but the bride lives usually in Hobart. Arthur's sister (presumptive) is a witness.
1875. Remaining in Sydney first child Arthur Robert arrives December 1875 Margaret registers the birth and says the father Arthur is a mariner and was born in Wales.
1877. This child dies in 1877 and by then the father Arthur is a quarryman.
1877. Also in this year in October, daughter Elizabeth is born in Sydney and again Margaret registers the birth and now states Arthur was born in Hobart and is a quarryman.
1916. Wales is not seen again as a birthplace for Arthur until it appears on his 1916 death certificate which is informed by a son-in-law Herbert C Stiles who married Arthur's daughter Emily (from his Pearse marriage).
It seems like a family truth has come out after the man's death.
We wonder was there a concealment of origins?
Sue
-
Definitely looks like there’s either been concealment or some type of mix up.
I don’t know how to find out the truth tho.
I have done a DNA test but I’m struggling with how to use the results to possibly get the info.
-
So have made up a bit of a timeline with various bits of information that might be easier to read.
Have used initials for Margaret Farquhar & Emily Pearse as well as Arthur John
-
Local paper mentioning his death says he was a 'native of Tasmania". Obviously the paper report depends on local knowledge and who knows who gave the information.

And the Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent give him a different number of children.
