I  can see there is a Helen Softly b. 1889/1900  on the 1901 Index in Walker, Tynemouth, Northumberland.  Parents on 1911 census are William and Catherine.

Would very much like to know who else was with her in 1901.  In particular if a sibling Robert was with her.

 Kind regards

Thank you Sandra. I'll take a look.

Robert is a real man of mystery.  Marries in 1912, has a family, but then disappears before the 1921 census never to appear on any documentation at all.  I can't even reliably find him on passenger lists.

You will find him at that address in 1939.
We aren’t allowed to post details.
-
				Correction
 That is not him.

I think that is Robert Finkle Softley.
In 1932, Robert F S is living with Rachel Mackay in Lawton Street.

Where did he marry in 1912? I can’t see it yet.
 Who did he marry?

I was about to ask who he married - when were his children born?

Does his wife claim to be married/widowed later on or  :-\

There is a medal card for a Robert Softley from WW1 - could that be why he disappeared?
-
Hmm another UK and Ireland, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 for Robert Softly. Does 5th of the address on these passenger lists mean anything ?

Robert Softly - aged 26 years - glass blower - going to 90 Gill Street. Newcastle Upon Tyne.

He married Isabella in 1912.  Has three children between 1913 and 1916.  Disappears for a bit (Isabella on 1921 census as head of house and married).  then further child in 1926, after which he is never heard of again. (But this suggested to me perhaps a period of working abroad for several years, maybe starting another family.  Returning 1925 ish, it not working out, and him returning abroad again.)

Like you I got very excited over robert Finkle Softly, who would have fitted brilliantly. However I can find a Birth reg for Robert Finkle Softly, which rather spoilt my investigations >:(

Maybe he did not return to father the child born 1926, Isabella as a married woman could have registered the birth without him present.  I wonder who registered the birth

Have you tried Electoral Registers 1921 - 1926?

Rosie has a valid point in that he may not be the father of the youngest child after such a gap.
-
				Just musing really.
What occupation is given for him on any children's marriage certificates?

-
as Isabella Softley was cremated Newcastle Upon Tyne, 18th April  1979
