Thank you Sarah and Trystan, and “everyone else”.  With the help of others, I’ve found out a lot about my ancestors but even more important (to me), others so kindly have shared their knowledge about my ancestors’ towns, counties, way of life, dialects, etc.  One can find out so much by researching the internet, but there’s nothing like communicating with people who actually have firsthand knowledge of my English and Irish ancestors’ lives.

All the best from rainy California.  (But we are thrilled to have rain after our recent severe droughts.)  :)

A very big thank you from me too.
This is such a friendly helpful site.
It’s wonderful when someone suggest looking a brick wall from an angle you hadn’t thought of and it tumbles.
I’ve never been to scared to ask a ‘stupid question’ , all answers given with kindness and encouragement.
You’ve created an excellent community with an encouraging ethos.
Thank you

I am so glad I discovered this magical site.
There are so many little fairies popping up with thoughts and help.

I'm sure you'll all be having something stronger later, but in the meantime a cup of tea and cake served in Royal Albert 'Heirloom' bone china seems quite fitting.

I wish to add my congratulations to Rootschat and thanks to Tristan and Sarah and all the moderators for executing not an easy task. I've corresponded with and even met people face to face from this group who've offered advice, cups of coffee and even taken me around churchyards showing where my ancestors lived and worked.

In the early days of my research there were some extremely helpful folk on here who helped me considerably. I don't know what I'd have done without you. Never mind the lack of a Pantomime surely we should have our own New Year's Honours List?

Louisa Maud, I’m slightly embarrassed to ask again!

There would be a lot of threads to try and gather together… 🥹😂

However, after 40+ years of searching, I do now have certain things that I can rule out and so I guess that that’s something positive!!

Best wishes, Romilly

2023 has been a bumper year for me and my Suffolk ancestry, including finding a direct ancestor shipped to Australia in 1791, to finding a marriage that has taken me years to find, due to the wife being previously married, and the husband was listed with a slight variant of the surname. And several more 1650-1753 surviving baptism registers for certain deaneries in Suffolk have been released in 2023 further helping my research.

Ironically when I was in Australia in 2007, I stayed at a hotel just a few hundred yards from the church where my convict ancestor was buried.

Well we had been quietly thinking that we were coming upto 20 years... ::) well that happened very quickly !

We are very touched that it was not just ourselves marking the anniversary. We are all very proud to hear that there is no such thing as a "daft question" that is what we have always felt is really important to address, ask away ! (important in real life too)

Our huge thanks to all our Moderators and members both old and new, everyone has brought their own talents and experience to some massive subjects that we had never even thought of and importunately kept us all together during some difficult times the covid diary was so important to many of us.

God Bless, wishing you all a Healthy and Happy New Year !

Wow.
Thank you everybody. I can't add much to Sarah's words.

This time twenty years ago, we were deliberating whether to 'launch' RootsChat, as we weren't sure if it was ready. We'd spent months posting useful links to resources, divided the forum into what we hoped were useful categories. The 'back end' of the server was ready. We really didn't know what to expect.

Once we went live, the love flooded in.

You wonderful people started posting in your droves, and equally wonderful members of the RootsChat family replied. Soon, we found the number of postings hard to manage, and some of our friends volunteered their valuable time to become moderators - for whom we are so very grateful.

We've had RootsChat Meets and had so much fun meeting some of you.

We've also had some of our friends on here sadly passing away, and thankfully had the time to pay our respects with some of them.

There have been technical challenges(*) that seemed huge at times, but thankfully we seem to have been blessed along the way.

The most important thing though is to thank all of you. Yes, all of you. You are RootsChat.

Thank you.
Trystan

(*) One of the technical challenges: At one point, the 'traffic' (busyness) of the site meant that we had to use server hardware that cost us four times the cost of our mortgage. That was a scary time, but we insisted that it would always be free.

It's been 19 years for me. Thank you for everyone one of them.

Looking back at my early posts, I'm still, unsurprisingly, chasing the same families but for most my research is now generations further back.  Rootschat has been such a great help over the years.  It's a site that members can give to and take from, with people freely giving their time, sharing their research & knowledge.

Long may it continue.............

Now into 2024, while I had done some genealogy beforehand, it was Feb 2004 when I really became a hardcore genealogist as I was in London and went to the FRC in Clerkenwell as I wanted to check a birth of an actor born in my home town, to try to get the exact DOB. All I found was his name and district of birth in Births registered in April, May and June 1933. I was then told I had to buy the cert to get the full details. But I knew he died in 1998 and got his exact DOB from the registry of deaths in 1998.

At the same time it got me thinking about really delving into my own tree, and the rest is history.

Thanks to Sarah, Trystan and all the Moderators for giving us this wonderful playground. I, and others migrated from the then, "BBC Forum" to Rootschat on a recommendation from jc26red and have never looked back. This free Family History website is unique in so many ways and I am so pleased to be a part of it for the last 17 years. The help that I received with my Family History was invaluable and has helped knock down so many brick walls for me across the globe.
Having also had many torn cracked and creased old photos brought back to life, I decided that I would like to repay the kindness and help that I had received by purchasing a photo editing software to give something back to the Rootschat community. After a shaky start, I was soon able to contribute to the forums which is the essence which Rootschat is all about. Happy 20th Anniversary...Long may it continue.

Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New year.

It is hard to believe that it was some 14 years ago that I somewhat nervously asked a question about M.I s in Lanchester Churchyard. Subsequently I have "met" lots of interesting people and find it so comforting that this remains a site where expertise abounds and is valued.
