Hello Everyone - I was hoping someone might be able to help me locate a couple of houses in Bournemouth? I expect that they are no longer standing, but would like to be able to see where they once were if that is the case.
The first one I am looking for is 'Dundonald, 82 Christchurch Road' - there was a school at this address for some years, definitely between 1889-1895 - the Principals were Mrs Fanny Fox and Miss Kate Williams. I have looked on the National Libraries of Scotland (NLS) side by side maps and found an old map that shows very clearly each house along the road in about 1900 but none are numbered or named bar the odd huge house. I think 82 was located roughly near the corner of Knole Road and Christchurch Road - Linden Hall is named on the 1900 map on one corner, and a modern map shows this site (now flats) is number 80. The next corner sees a jump in numbering to 428 which is odd.
The second house I am hoping to locate is 'St Elmo, Hawkwood Road' - the same two ladies were next at this address in the 1901 census. I do not have a number for this house, and can see from modern maps that most of this road is now a car park bar a few houses at the eastern end. I have found that the road was lined with detached houses in 1900 from the old maps on NLS website but again cannot pinpoint exactly where this house once stood (or may still stand if at the eastern end).
Any help locating where these houses once stood, or still stand, would be much appreciated!
Many thanks, Nina

It is listed between 'Hawkwood' and 'St Winifreds' on the 1901 census. The house on the other side of Hawkwood is listed as Shelley Grove (Crahton Close Road)
Have you tried looking for the property on later census or 1939 register.

Many of those houses still remain, some converted into care homes. I did manage to find and photograph one old house in that area for someone a few years ago. Unfortunately I am now housebound or I would have done the same for you.
I suggest you try following the roads on Google street view.
Rosie99 made a typo, it should be Crabton Close Road.

Thank you Jebber - I have had a bit of a wander on Google Street View but not much joy. And thank you Rosie99 - with your info I will have another walkabout and see if anything remains! At the moment I don't have a sub to Ancestry or FindMyPast so cannot access the census returns or 1939 register in full. Many thanks, Nina

Hi Rosie99 - those houses that you mentioned - do you know if they were on the north or south side of the street? Many thanks, Nina
-
It does not say what side, I was reading from a census return

By 1921 they had moved a little further east to Wentworth Avenue, again no number. I know for certain those houses are still there.
I looked to see if Kate Williams was still alive and in Wentworth Ave in 1939, because that would have given the number, but no luck. I know who lived at no 29 in 1939, because my mother was governess to their two daughters, so I looked for them in 1921 in the hope I could work out the house number for your two, but the people I knew were living several roads away.
So I’m sorry, not much help to you.

Thanks so much for having a look for me Jebber! Fanny died in 1935 and Kate in 1937. My next quest will be to find where they are buried, so I have emailed Bournemouth Council to see if they can help.
Thank you Rosie99 for letting me know.

The newspapers have several items referring to "Dundonald, Boscombe Hill". Also -
Leeds Mercury, 19 Oct 1901

1935 map (unfortunately, the old street map for Bournemouth I spotted does not cover this area)

Thank you hanes teulu - I will have a look into that newspaper listing. I wonder if Dundonald is now 428 (Carlton Court) Christchurch Road? Nina

If you have access to newspapers have a look at the Bournemouth Guardian, 1 Dec 1894. It mentions postal deliveries. Dundonald mentioned and occupiers.

Thanks! That's very interesting ...

The original does look like Crahton :)

This is a 1910 pic of Boscombe Chine Gdns - which I imagine is the Christchurch Rd end?

Alwyn (the owner of the flickr site mentioned in the above reply) is very knowledgeable about Bournemouth history -- he has a huge collection of postcards of the area.
It might be worthwhile to contact him and see if he can help identify the addresses for you

Good idea - I see he is on Rootschat as well as Flickr so I will send him a message. Many thanks, Nina

It’s definitely Crabton Close road, it still exists. Hawkwood Road runs from Sea Road to Crabton Close Road, I used to park in it when I went to the dentist.
I have been through all my books of old photos of Bournemouth. Christchurch Road, is a very long road and runs from the Lansdown roundabout Bournemouth, right through to Iford where it joins Barrack Road in Christchurch. The only pictures I can find are either where it forms the main shopping area through Boscombe, or from the beginning where the houses are concealed by trees. It is partway along that stretch I think number 82 would have been, on the north side of the road.

What you need is the OS National Grid Series map at 1:2500, which will have the house numbers. The series was first published from c1950 to c1970. The NLS is gradually adding these to its website, but so far only Scotland, London and parts of SE England. You should be able to view it at Bournmouth Library. It depends whether the buildings were still standing when the map was surveyed, but if not you should be able to locate them between remaining numbers, and compare with the County Series 1:2500, 1935 edition, previously mentioned.

Thank you Jebber for having a look through your books for me - that's very helpful info.
And thank you MollyC, that's very interesting - I don't live in UK so won't be able to visit Bournemouth Library, but will keep checking the NLS site to see if they have added the map I want!

Try making an enquiry to Bournmouth Library. They may be able to send a copy or work out the answers, possibly a small fee. I had a very helpful free response from County Wicklow when I asked about a house in Arklow where my (English) relative had lodged 1914-16. I only had a house name, no number.

I've worked my through endless old photos (always a delight) of Victorian/Edwardian Boscombe and its fine buildings, admiring in particular the Arcade -

and, suddenly, up on screen pops "Is Boscombe really that bad!!!", stating " ... sounds like a crack den by the sea". But the locals came to its defence.

Both houses are now located! Nina

Magic - thanks for the update.
