Title: Margaret Hardie (mmn Laurie)
Post by: Truebrit on Friday 29 December 23 12:15 GMT (UK)
Hi

We are researching the Hardie family of Coatbridge Glasgow: Thomas Muir Hardie (1880-1940); Margaret Hardie (mn Laurie) (1880-1959); and their children Thomas M (1901), John L (1903), George (1905), James (1908), Agnes M (1909), and Helen (1911).  There is also an adopted daughter Margaret Hardie Martin (1900).

We can see Thomas on the 1921 census in Coatbridge, a married man, with his sons but there is no sign of his wife Margaret or their daughters.  Can anyone spot where they are in 1921, in particular Helen?

Quite possibly:

HARDIE
AGNES M
1921
F
12
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

HARDIE
HELEN
1921
F
9
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

I noticed the family advertising from their Coatbridge address, what appeared to be a holiday home (room and kitchen, 4 beds, near pier), in Tighnabruaich in 1930s, hence thought they may have links to Argyll area.

HARDIE
MARGARET
1921
F
40
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

HARDIE
MARGARET
1921
F
22
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

So all four look to be together in Argyll, but also in same house are:

HARDIE
JAMES
1921
M
13
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

HARDIE
AGNES
1921
F
45
518/ 5/ 19
KILFINAN
ARGYLL

Was James with his dad and brothers at Coatbridge, or missing with his mum and sisters? Could Agnes snr be a sister of Thomas?

Thanks all.  I took a chance and downloaded that census and it was the right family.  I have not done much Scottish research to date and so am not very familiar with resources, and never would have found it without the help, so am grateful for everyone’s assistance.

Where were the advertisements noted as they could be an interesting line of enquiry?

I am trying to find out more about this family - particularly Helen.  I think that she may have married a William George Biggs in 1951 so may not have had a family.  I see that she was buried with her parents in Coatbridge, following her death in 1989. Can recent certificates (the 1951 marriage or 1989 death) be ordered from anywhere?

Thanks

TB

Thanks for those articles Sandra - very helpful.  They seem to tie in with the gravestone photo I located! Not sure who the daughter in law Crissie is though, and which of Thomas’s sons she married - not Thomas M Hardie by the look of it as the marriage you found for him was to a Mary.

All very helpful and appreciated.  Thanks

Thanks for all of this again.

Looking at Helen’s marriage to William George Biggs on the Scotlands People website:

SURNAME
HARDIE
FORENAME
HELEN
SPOUSE SURNAME
BIGGS
SPOUSE FORENAME
WILLIAM GEORGE
YEAR
1951
REF644 / 9 / 192
RD NAME
KELVINGROVE

It says that certificates are not available - is that correct?  A similar statement appears when I search for her 1989 death.

Thanks Sandra

It may mean I need to order hard copies but the searches indicate that no certificates are available.  Having never ordered from there before I will need to look to see what to do.

Certificates are temporarily unavailable. They will be available as normal after the New Year break, from 3 January.

Which is why I said

Actually, I think the notice on the SP web site could have been more clearly worded :)

Its confusing because on those particular entries, it does say certificates not available.
So can Truebrit not get a hard copy at all ?

Yes, he can get a hard copy. He just has to wait a few days longer before he can place his order.

Those 'certificates not available' notices are temporary, and they apply to all certificates, not just those ones, while SP is closed for the New Year holiday break. They will be back to work on 3 January and the certificate ordering system will be reactivated after they return.

As I have said, they could have worded it better.
