Title: William Whitehouse
Post by: mhetfield on Thursday 21 December 23 05:58 GMT (UK)
Hello all,

I hope this is right.

I am looking for help to find some information about a William Whitehouse Born 1813 Frome, Somerset. Father Richard Whitehouse.

William would go on to join the 36th regiment of foot
service number: 902
enlistment year: 1832
age on enlistment: 19
document list birth: Frome.
father as: Richard Whitehouse.
Delistment location as: Bath

I have a marriage for William and Catherine who were married in Western Australia.
on the document it states his father as Richard.

Just wondering if anyone could give me a hand. I feel like I have looked everywhere but with no hope.

I have searched freereg, Ancestry, My heritage and Find my past
the closest I have got is:

Father: Richard Whitehouse
Mother: Sarah
Child: James Whitehouse
Born: 1810
Place: Frome

Father: Richard Whitehouse
Mother: Sarah
Child: Elizabeth
Born: 1814
Place: Frome

There is another option maybe?

Father: Isaac Whitehouse
Mother: Agnes
Child: William
Born: 1815
Place: Longport

Its the closest William Whitehouse born around that time.

any help you could give would be great.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Cheers
Michael

On William’s marriage does it give an occupation for his father?
What was William’s occupation, on immigration and on marriage, and after?

no occupation for Williams father sorry.

at the time of his marriage William is enrolled pensioner.
on his enlistment record Williams occupation is listed as tailor.

If I am looking at the correct couple in Australia, his religion was Roman Catholic.
I am not sure what catholic baptisms from Frome are available online.

With an occupation like a tailor, my thoughts are he would have been literate. Does he sign his name on documents? If so, you might expect his father to also be literate and in a similar occupation.

No, William makes his mark with an x on his enlistment.

Side note, Tailor could also be Sailor, depending on which document you read it is very unclear and the Ts and Ss look very similar.

yea rosie99,

But there is no real link besides a name, William listed his father as Richard a couple of time but who really know could it be Isaac Richard or another name.

at the moment I am just going with the best guess.

I have spent years on this lol still no luck, thank you all for your help.

I believe that Richard may be Richard Whitehouse who married Sarah Priste at Marston Bigot 26th November 1820.  In 1841 he is in Paulton age 64 occ Moulder with Sarah age 63 and an Elizabeth Whitehouse age 17.  Richard and Sarah were not bn in County, Elizabeth was.

Also marrying in Marston Bigot were John Whitehouse and Jane Priston - 18th August 1822, one of the witnesses was a Richard Whitehouse.  John and Jane baptised a son Richard 15th October 1825 at Frome, also a daughter Elizabeth 15th July 1823 (abode Bath Street).  In 1851 dtr Elizabeth can be found at Stoneham Street, Great Coggeshall, Witham, Essex, unmarried with 2 daughters.

Just wondering if the 2 wives were sisters and one of the surnames incorrectly transcribed, they are similar.  :)
...

I am also wondering if Richard's marriage to Sarah was a second marriage for him.  Could your William have been a child of the first marriage  :-\.

The other family who were resident in Frome were Isaac Whitehouse and Grace Spencer who married in Frome in 1824, they lived in Fromefield though Isaac is not with them in 1841.  By 1851 they are in Colchester, Essex.  Isaac was born c1803 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. occ Master Iron Founder.

Richard was a Moulder
John was a Foundryman
Did they all originate in Staffordshire area

ADDED An online tree suggests that when William married in Australia in 1856 he was a widower    :-\

I have added a link for William Whitehouse its most information I have on him at this time.
Enrolled Pensioner force Western Australia.
https://enrolledpensionerforcewa.org.au/epf-profiles/w/whitehouse-william/

It does say they think he may be a widow and also has a child.

I think William was a widow but did not have a child. the child in question is she second wives oldest child. Mary Jane Branigan Born 1848 to Charles Branigan and Catherine Kain/Cain

I have started trying to find out what happened to the Whitehouse families that were in Frome 1840/50's just in case there were clues or so they could be eliminated.

Isaac and Grace moved to Essex
Grace died in March qtr 1852 and Isaac remarried.  In 1861 his wife and children were in Chelmsford, in 1871 they were all there. Isaac was age 67 born West Bromwich.

John & Jane had 2 children Elizabeth in 1823 and Richard in 1825 - Richard was buried c1827.  There are 2 possibilities for Elizabeth in 1841 one in the Asylum in Frome, the other living with Richard and Sarah in Paulton.  I can't see John or Jane in 1841

It is not possible to add images to a post on the 'look up' boards.

In 1861 at Coleford, Kilmersdon are a James Weeks occupation Tailor age 62 born Radstock, Somerset and his wife Ann age 57 born East Stoke (?) .  They are still there in 1871.
Just found them there in 1851, also there is a Sarah Widcombe a widow age 78 (bn c1772) born Gt Cheverill - could that be an enumerators error and be Sarah Whitehouse.  A Sarah Whitehouse was buried at Coleford 10th May 1854 age 82 (bn c1772).  Interesting that James Weeks is a tailor  :-\

A James Weeks married an Ann Priston in Marston Bigot 6th August 1835.  Ann is possibly the sister of Jane who married John Whitehouse.

What happened to John and Jane after the burial of their son Richard at St Johns in 1827  :-\

just wondering do you know if the army completed census at that time?

the only reason i ask is that William would have been in the 36th regiment on the 1841 and the 1851 census.

I think the military if abroad are only on later census

that no good....

on Williams record it states that he was in North America for 3 years and then Ionian Islands for 4 years is that something we can use?

if i have the right regiment,

the regiment was moved to North America in 1838
Ionian Islands 1847

This is from Wikipedia, the regiments movements.

The regiment was at Barbados until 1833 when it moved to Antigua;[41] it transferred St Lucia in 1835 and back to Barbados in 1837.[42] It then moved on to North America arriving in Nova Scotia in 1838 and New Brunswick in 1839[43] before returning to Ireland in 1842.[44] The regiment moved to Northern England in 1845; a second or reserve battalion was formed at Weedon Bec on 28 November 1846.[45] It was posted back to the United States of the Ionian Islands in 1847: both battalions were stationed there during an insurgency. The reserve battalion was absorbed by the 1st Battalion in April 1850.[46]

In 1851 the regiment returned to Barbados before moving on to Trinidad in 1852.[47] In 1853 it returned to Barbados

might be a trace on him in Ireland or Northern England?

You would be better asking on the military boards about that.
