Hi Chatters, I’m looking for help! Grab a coffee before reading as it’s quite long.
Anyone good at breaking down brick walls? I’ve found a marriage between Isaac Swalwell & Eleanor Rowell m 7 Feb 1863. In the 1871 England census Isaac is living in Front street, Cassop, Co. Durham, married, boarder but no mention of his wife Eleanor. In fact I can’t find her anywhere! Move forward to 1881 he is living in Back Road, Tudhoe, Co. Durham with the same family as in 1871. He seems to have move house with them! The 1891 shows him as the head of the house and his wife is now Jane Swalwell nee Henderson (her birth name) and is the daughter of the previous head of household (Mary Henderson d 1882). I cannot find any previous marriage of Jane Henderson who could be the father of her 3 children. Isaac has inherited the 3 children of Jane, they are shown as stepson/daughters. I cannot neither find any marriage between Isaac and Jane nor any death of Eleanor Swalwell nee Rowell. The same logic applies to the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census Isaac is living in Redcar and is named as the Father-in-law to the head. He dies shortly after the 1911 census as he can’t be found anywhere. I’m hoping someone out there may have different resources to me and can come up with an answer!

Possibly Eleanor in 1871 Census:
Haswell Lane East, Haswell, Easington, Durham
Ellen Swalwell, aged 48, married, Head, born Durham, on her own
and this burial(found on Durham Records Online):
Easington - 1874 - Ellen Swalwell, year of birth 1823, Haswell

I Think that the 1871 census found by sgf28 is correct.
This is the the 1861 for Eleanor Rowell in Haswell. Note that her place of birth corresponds with that for 1861( i. e. Wapping - now in Penshaw/ Burnmoor ).

If you look at the transcript of the marriage of Isaac Swalwell to Eleanor ( note that her surname is transcribed as Powell) it shows she was a widow and that her maiden name was Marley ( father George). I believe her first husband was called Cuthbert Rowell ( marriage Easington RD 1842 - her surname transcribed as Morley).

You should be able to find baptisms for the Rowell children and for Eleanor Marley( 1822 Penshaw).
William

There is a hint on ancestry that says Cuthbert Rowell died in Australia 1861 age 40
parents Henry and Jane.
I'm not sure if you are interested in Cuthbert.
-------------------
Isaac Swallwell appears to have deserted his wife Eleanor (was Rowell nee Marley) shortly after the marriage.
Jane Henderson's first illegitimate child William being born 1864, then Robert 1866 and Isabella 1868.
DNA match would tell who the father is, but I bet it's Isaac Swallwell.

There is a death for Isaac Swalwell age 79 in June of 1911 - FreeBMD
Deceased on line states he died 26 June 1911

Hi Chatters, thank you all for your help with this. I believe with all the info you have provided the brick wall has been demolished.
