Hi folks, im researching my family and i have found a few De bank family members , which is also spelt, debank, debanks, debanke, nebank, deebank etc on various census, but they are down as , horse dealers, basket makers, hawkers etc, i wondered if anyone had any history of de banks as gypsies ?
-
There's a surprising amount of info with regard to Gypsy families but I can't
see anything about the Debanks.
Can you give some first names & dates you're looking at ?
It may be a Debank has married into a known Gypsy family.

Hi,
You could ask for this to be moved to the Travelling People group on the Special Interests board.
-
The one Carol put up refers to the marriage of Julia De Bank.
She was the illegitimate daughter of Ann who married a carpenter.
Julia lived with her grandmother who was an Innkeeper.
We really need the De Bank names.
-
If one of your ancestors is Robert De Bank born around 1839 in Cromford, Derbyshire, he is in about 20 trees on Ancestry, so worth contacting the tree owners to discuss the matter.
-
Yes robert de bank is one, i think he married a sarah groom or austin, i think his father was william whoni think married an eliza , although without looking i could be wrong
-
I have a connection to DeBank in Gloucestershire, never seen any gypsy connections though.
You may find this site of interest; http://www.sharons-tree.co.uk/debanks_in_the_cotswolds.htm

Wow thats great thankyou
-
Not my site but it is informative
-
Yes robert de bank is one
There's little to suggest he was a Gypsy although he did
have occupations often carried out by Gypsies.
There's no indication he was living that lifestyle.
-
Yes , i know a few people just sort of took on thst lifestyle but i havent gone bsck very far past him so i just tjought id ask the question here, but thankyou for everyones help its been very informative, on that de bank page it made me laugh as it says they were known for their black shiney curly hair which is exactly like my mum and uncle and grandad, i bet they all went grey early aswell, as thats a debank trait in our family but no baldness. Thsnkyou again

If you decide to take a closer look at Robert you need to view the online trees with caution.
They show him marrying in 1857 but it's the wrong Robert De Bank.
His age is 10 years out & he has a different father's name.
