Looking for a date when Thomas Charles Lenton emigrated to Australia. It was 1893 - 97. He was born in Hackney in 1857 and died in Kalgoorie, Western Australia in 1924. My UK-only Ancestry membership does show he appeared on a passenger list but I can't access it. Many thanks.

There is a T C LENTON aged 39, a mason on the Orizaba, leaving England on 12 Nov. 1897 intending to go to Albany.
Also a T C LENTON aged 45, a miner, on the Ophir, leaving England on 15 Aug. 1902 intending to go to Fremantle.
-
However, you may have seen already - his wife Ellen died in Kalgoorlie and probate was given in June 1897.

So he must have been in WA before June. :-\
(trove is not supposed to be working today and tomorrow, however seems to be alright at the moment.)

There is a Thomas C LENTON aged 27, arriving Brisbane on 11 Nov. 1884 from London on the Duke of Argyll. I can only see a transcription, will look for an image of the passenger list.
Modified to add:
though this is probably too early, if you say between 1893 - 1897.
Modified again:
Unfortunately the image does not give occupation (on page 275):

(put "lenton" into the search and click on the link under digital image to access the images)
For interest, I notice there are a few COLEs and CREEDs.

It looks like Ellen (30) and son Thomas (4) arrived 23 Jan. 1887 on the Port Victor in Sydney.
Thomas Charles LENTON of 135 Cumberland St, Sydney paid the deposit on 20 July 1886 for Ellen Cole LENTON (wife, 30) and Thomas Lenton (child, 5) and Sidney W CREED (nephew, 13) for the Port Victor, leaving 4 Dec 1886.
-
For interest, there is an advertisement in 1888 :
"CONFORTABLE LODGINGS for single men. 135 Cumberland-street, city. Large unfurnished Room to Let."

"Thomas Charles Lenton emigrated to Australia. It was 1893 - 97"
What do you know about 1893 for this to be a time reference?
What information do you see on his death certificate?

Thanks all. My reason for wanting to know his departure year is that I am researching and writing a local book, and Thomas Charles Lenton was a lodger in one of the village pubs in 1891. He was a conjuror and ventriloquist and seemed to be travelling around England with his trade in the 1880s. He made an appearance in 1893, and then my next contact with him was his wife's death in Kalgoorie in 1897. So I guess they emigrated between those years. I thought his stay in the local pub would add a bit of colour to the village's history.
-
Am glad so many generous people spent time on this post: it would have been more helpful if you had disclosed the information you had ( ? conjuror etc) in your initial post.
Still think he came in 1884 as in 1886, living in Sydney, he pays a deposit for his wife, child and nephew to travel to Australia. Certainly wouldn't have been in England then.

Good idea for a very long link is to use ShrinkLink.

Sorry to say I'm still learning the finer points of how to use Ancestry and other research resources (we've all been there at some point). I didn't realise that knowing TL's trade of ventriloquism would be of such importance in finding him on a passenger list. Cheer up :-\
Thanks all for your help. If he did emigrate to Australia in the 1880s I wonder why he found himself lodging in a village pub in Yorkshire in 1891.
-
Its a big stretch from ventriloquist in Yorkshire to marble miner in Kalgoorlie ( Ref Letters of administration 1897 wife's death)!
-
Do you think it more likely that the Thomas LENTON (34, married, ventriloquist and conjurer, born Spitalfields) in the 1891 lodging at Shillington is this Thomas LENTON in 1911 at 30 Whymark Ave, Wood Green:
Thomas LENTON 54 Spitalfields (manager cinemagraph)
Elizabeth 44 Clerkenwell
Frank Thomas 22 Islington
Jessie Mabel 19 Paddington
Arthur John 16 Islington
In 1891 Elizabeth and son Frank are at 210 Whitehall Rd, Paddington
Elizabeth LENTON 24 Clerkenwell (married)
Frank T 2 Islington
Emma LEACOCK 23 Clerkenwell (sister)
Maud LEACOCK 9 Clerkenwell (sister)

There are quite a few mentions in newspapers of "Professor Lenton" a ventriloquist and conjurer who seems to have been from London but travelled around England performing (many after 1893). In 1911 there is a report of an "Electric Picture Theatre" opening at Wellington Hall and Professor Lenton was there as part of the entertainment.
Friday, Mar. 3, 1911
Publication: Dover Express
Can't see a death notice, however the latest mention in newspapers I can see for "Professor Lenton" is 1925. (Surrey Mirror 16 Jan 1925).
-
Meant to add yesterday:
Thomas LENTON (45, entertainer, exhib, born Spitalfields) in 1901 is lodging at the house of Isaac DEWHURST (licensced victualler) at 20 Main Rd, Woodland, Durham.
RG13/4655 pg 4
His wife Elizabeth and daughter Jessie are visiting at the house of John STRONG in Pelton, Durham
RG13/4700 pg45

I have been wondering why I couldn't find a marriage or birth records for the children of Thomas LENTON and Elizabeth (presumably nee LEACOCK, from her sisters' names in the 1891 census).
I found a freemason record for Thomas LENTON, entertainer. It has his name originally as Thomas BRAHAM, crossed out and a note hard to read but looks like "... known as Thos Lenton". (Membership Register for the Royal Savoy Lodge, initiation 26 Feb 1900, aged 44, of 3 Coleridge Rd.)
The children are then to be found registered under BRAHAM (mmn LEACOCK):
1889 Frank Thomas (Islington 1b/288)
1891 Jessie Mabel (Paddington 1a/57)
1892 Harold Bertram (Islington 1b/392)
1893 Ernest Henry (Islington 1b/407) (died 1893 Islington 1b/298)
1895 Arthur John (Islington 1b/405)
1897 George Nelson (Islington 1b/378) (died 1898 Islington 1b/299)
These all fit perfectly with the 1911 census.
Still can't find a marriage though.
-
I don't have a subscription to findmypast, but can see Thomas and Elizabeth LENTON (and daughter Jessie) in the 1921 census at Wood Green.
The electoral roll for 1925 has a Thomas and Elizabeth LENTON at 63 Schubert Rd, Wandsworth.
There is a death for an Elizabeth LENTON at Wandsworth in 1934 (1d/597) aged 68.
And a death for a Thomas LENTON at Wandsworth in 1939 (1d/762) aged 83.
Just possibilities, though they are the right ages.
-
A bit more detail:
Frank Thomas BRAHAM bap 19 May 1889 at St Paul, Islington. Parents - Thomas (entertainer) and Elizabeth, of 51 Richmond Rd.
Jessie Mabel BRAHAM baptised 5 July 1891 at St Thomas, Islington. Parents - Thomas (french polisher) and Elizabeth, of 178 Drayton Park.
There is a Thomas BRAHAM, 20, bach, french polisher married Lucy FLYNN, 19, spin, on 24 May 1874 at St Jude, Bethnal Green. (His father - James BRAHAM, picture framer).
Probable 1871 then at Bethnal Green:
James BRAHAM 43 Spitalfields (gilder)
Morgan 38 Mile End
James 20
Thomas 15 Spitalfields (french polisher)
George 13
Ann 10
William 1 Bethnal Green
RG10/477/63 pg 19
I can't see a suitable death for Lucy BRAHAM (nee FLYNN). This could be a reason why there is no marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth LEACOCK.
-
Oh, this could be the first wife - Sadly there is a City Road workhouse, Holborn admission for Lucy BRAHAM aged 31 in 1886 "insane". Discharged to Banstead Asylum. In 1939 she is in Tooting Bec Hospital. Lucy BRAHAM died in 1941 Wandsworth (1d/492) aged 86.
