My GGGGGF was Nicholas Morrish and married May Smith in April 1809 in the Tolbooth Church (which was part of St Giles). May's father was James Smith a trunkmaker. NM was listed as Nichols Morris.
NM was a drummer in the Royal Marines for 23 years and he is from Cornwall. They moved back to St Enoder Cornwall in 1814-1817 approx.
I have the family downpat from here to today. My interest is over the forebears/ancestors to both MS and NM.
I have some leads in my tree eg James Smith married Agnes Anderson in Glasgow / Mason and dau Mary in 1787.
These were based on the childrens names, they are
Elizabeth B 1810 (no OPR record found but in Edingbugh from census data from 1841 onwards)
James B 1812 (same as above, both in Scotland, no OPR record found)
Nicholas Anderson B 1816 Truro/Cornwall. So, where does this name originate from
Miriam Smith B1817 St Enoder - so uses Mother name but this is type 3rd dau
John B 1820
Jane B 1821 - no trace after baptism
Christian Anderson B 1823
Catherine B 1824
Philly B1825
Thomas Kerr B1827 - this is my line and the name Carr comes into use, probably due to accents!
So, do the children's names provide clues to the forebears for me to check further.
Perhaps there were more children between 1812-1816 - the first two could not be found for Baptisms (only known born in Edinbugh from census data)
I can find an Anderson - married James Smith. Can not link any Kerrs (assume Scottish). On the fathers' side, there are a lot of other Nicholas Morrish from the same area in Cornwall.Crantock
May names changed in census to Miriam/May/Mary

On SP there is note against the Tolbooth Church records, see appendix 1 reference CH2/140.
This may be why the first 2 or 3 children were not found?
