Hi
My 5th GGF Thomas Potter was born in 1771 Ilkeston Derbyshire. he was a Soldier in the 90th foot brigade the 69th foot brigade and the 3rd Veteran battalion ( Jersey)
he had three children born in the garrison in Jersey.
Elizabeth Potter in 1805
Barbara Ann Potter in 1807
Thomas Potter 1809
His wife was Mary ( No confirmed surname but possibly Glover ) I don't know where I got this surname from as I failed to log the source and can no longer find it. or could be a mistake my end.
Given he was a soldier and his wife was obviously with him in Jersey he could have married anywhere but according to the 1851 census Mary was born 1774 in Calverton Nottingham
Can anyone see a marriage that may help me confirm this info.
Kind regards Judi

Looking at the image for the 1851 it doesn't look like Calverton to me, but "Notts Colorton" which doesn't seem to be a place. However, I wondered if it was Coleorton, which I realise is in Leicestershire, but not all that far from Nottinghamshire. :-\
Have you investigated the James ARCHER and family who are visitors with the POTTERS in 1851? Though maybe his wife Hannah is related to Thomas, as also born Ilkeston?

Might be worth looking at these, given that the CP record suggests the occupation of blacksmith:
Marriage:
1802 08 19 Thomas POTTER Mary SHAW NOTTINGHAM St Mary
There are then no baptisms for a suitable couple there until 1816. Then there's a cluster, and no other Notts marriage to account for them -- possibly this could happen if Thomas's military service had come to an end and they'd moved back to Notts?
Baptisms to Thomas and Mary Potter at Notts St Mary:
1816 02 19 Sarah Narrow Marsh
1817 06 30 Mary Narrow Marsh Father's occ Blacksmith
1819 03 02 John Red Lion Square Father's occ Blacksmith
1821 05 08 Joseph Robinson's Bldgs Father's occ Blacksmith
1822 08 18 Ruth Wharf St Father's occ Whitesmith
1824 09 07 George Butcher Close Father's occ smith
Some burials that match the addresses and/or names above, all at Notts St Mary:
1816 02 25 Thomas POTTER age 2m Narrow Marsh
1817 09 23 Mary POTTER age 3m Red Lion Sq
1818 06 27 William POTTER age 5 Red Lion Sq
1821 09 19 Joseph POTTER age 6m Robinson's Wharf
1822 01 27 John POTTER age 3 Robinson's Wharf
1823 03 07 Ruth POTTER age 7m Brewer St
1825 03 13 George POTTER age 7m Butchers St
1853 03 03 Mary POTTER age 79 Butcher St (so yob 1774)

I have looked into the ARCHER family that were living with Thomas Potter and wife Mary in the 1851 census. ;D
James Archer married Hannah POTTER 27 Dec 1829 • Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.
Hannah Potter was baptised to Thomas and Mary Potter on the 23 Feb 1812 • Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England
So we can conclude Hannah is part of the family. .......
Following on from that I took a look for further baptism's in Ilkeston to Thomas and Mary Potter and there is a William Potter Baptised 26 Sep 1813 • Derbyshire, England • Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England father ( Blacksmith)
I still have no proof of Mary's surname but following up all lines of research suggested will update any conclusive news.
Really appreciate all the help and advice and currently following all new lines of research
Thanks Judi

William's birth would fit with the death of William Potter in 1818, as per list above.

If Mary and Thomas were born in the first half of the 1770s, it strikes me that even the earlier baptisms in barracks give a relatively late parental age.
So I'd look at the possibility that one or both parties had been married previously. If Mary was a widow when she married Thomas then it's going to be potentially trickier to find her surname.
Have you found them in 1841? Does it say whether Mary was born in the county?

There is reasonable info here https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LZPJ-M53/barbara-ann-potter-1807-1873 which is helpful. Looks as though Thomas joined the army in 1793, was injured in Egypt in 1801 and posted back to Nottingham where he married Mary Shaw in 1802. Then to Jersey where 3 children were baptised, left the army in 1811, 2 children bpt in Ilkeston, moved to Nottingham St Mary where several more children were bpt and buried. According to 1841 and 1851 census and father's occupation on Barbara's second marriage certificate Thomas was a blacksmith. Thomas died in 1853 quickly followed by Mary - Nottingham Journal 4/3/1853 "On Sunday last, aged 80, Mary Potter, Orchard's-yard, Butcher Street, Nottingham, having survived her husband (Thomas Putter) only seven weeks"
My best guess is that Mary's place of birth from the 1851 census is Carlton which is in the parish of Gedling and very convenient for Nottingham St Mary's. I can't get a handle on where the Gedling parish registers circa 1773 are. I can find a James Shaw on the 1851 census who says he was born in Carlton in 1779 but cannot find anything for Carlton/Gedling online around that time.
