Title: Leonard Bradley
Post by: Salty on Wednesday 08 November 23 09:51 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to help a friend with her Fam Tree and she has a Leonard Robert BRADLEY b 1876 in Islington.

He apparently died on a ship details below in 1917 and the details were found on a website called Remember the Fallen. This answer states that he was in the Army but was a member of the Nigerian Civil Service. It gives details of his marriage to Gertrude FROGGATT.
If he was in the Army as this seems to suggest, why can I not find any details on the CWGC etc

Thanks you Tom

The Probate entry and service number are for a Harry Leonard Bradley - not the same man as Lennard Robert Bradley.

I originally found Lennard Robert Bradley's probate on FindMyPast - which fitted the Eastham location.

I then checked Wills on line which delivered the "other" Bradley which I mistakenly posted.

Apologies for confusion.

Lennard Robert Bradley was an accountant and had been travelling back and forth between UK and Nigeria since 1909. He and his wife Gertrude Ellen (nee Froggatt) had arrived in UK on 10 June 1917 and he was returning to Lagos on the Umgeni.

I doubt very much that he was in the army.

Hi Shaun,

Thank you, may I ask where you discovered that he had been travelling since 1909?

Thanks Tom

I agree with Shaun that he wasn't in the Army. I have found a passenger list showing that he arrived in Liverpool on the 10th June from Lagos. His occupation is that of an Accountant aged 40 years. There is no way that he could have enlisted, been trained, and on his way back to Africa 5 months later. (image courtesy of Ancestry)

Add to that his final voyage on the Umgeni departed 31 October 1917. His destination port was Iddo.

Transcribed on Ancestry as T R Bradley, and on FindMyPast as L R Boadley.
