Title: MacDonald estates, Knoydart, Glenelg?
Post by: GiveWay1 on Tuesday 07 November 23 21:56 GMT (UK)
Hi
I have a news article that speaks of the departure of the William Nicol to Australia in early 1937. It does not provide names but lists that some people were from Knoydart and some from Glenelg as well as other places. There is also mention of the MacDonald Estates. Does anyone know where they were located?

I have DNA matches to those who went to Prince Edward Island in 1773 but so far have not been able to make the link by a paper trail. My ancestors who came to Australia were Allan and Ann McDonald.

Thanks
Colleen

Knoydart https://www.visitknoydart.co.uk/ is part of the parish of  Glenelg https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/INV/Glenelg and https://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/parish/Inverness/Glenelg

Not sure about the exact extent of the estates belonging to any or all major branches of the MacDonalds, but they would at one time have included large swathes of Inverness-shire including parts of the Isle of Skye.

Did you mean 1837, BTW?

If you are looking at the same article as I am, there is a list of how many people from each of several districts embarked. In that list a mention is made of Lochlash. This is a misspelling of Lochalsh, which is the next parish north of Glenelg.

Hi

Yes I did mean 1837.  :)

Also, I did know about the others mentioned who came from Lochalsh. I didn’t realise though that it was so close to Glenelg.

Thanks
Colleen

Yes, Lochalsh is the most southerly parish in the County of Ross and Cromarty, and Glenelg is the most northerly of the mainland west coast parishes in Inverness-shire.

Please can you add a link to the article?
