Title: Mary Fullwood Watson.....Stumped
Post by: Midilad on Saturday 04 November 23 16:03 GMT (UK)
Hi.... I have in my tree a Mary Fullwood Watson b.1911 Basford Notts.. She was my biological maternal grandmother although I never knew her as my Mother was adopted. I have her birth (1911) I also have her marriage to Thomas Carl Jones in 1936. She then appears in the 1939 register (as Mary Fullward Jones) with husband Thomas Carl. They had a child in September 1941  (my Mother) in Ilkeston Derbyshire. She was named Olwyn Maureen Jones and became Maureen Olwyn Harrison after the adoption in 1943. I can find no further records for her so I don't know if she any more children or re-married or any info on her death. I was hoping the more experienced amongst you may be able to shed some light on what became of her after my mothers birth and subsequent adoption. Any assistance would be most welcome......Alan

Do you have her exact date of birth?  That will help with a death as Jones is such a common surname.

There are other Jones/Watson births around 1941 but these could easily belong to another couple with the same surnames.

Thank you.

There's a Thomas Carl Jones born 15 Aug 1914 who died 1987 Leeds district but would need to check his birth date too.

Yes that seems to match if they were in London in 1939?
There are 3 closed records that may indicate children plus a nurse and a domestic.

Will send you a private message as these people may still be alive  :)

Yes... That's him his full DOB was 15.08.14. I don't know whether they remained together after the adoption and had further children, or if they went their seperate ways.

Your mothers birth was registered in the Ilkeston RD.  However - there was another Jones/Watson marriage in that RD in 1940 so you you need to be careful when looking for any other children born after your mother as they may not belong to the same parents

Just a thought

Do you have your mothers adoption records?  Do they give any reason for her adoption?  I wondered whether Mary may have died or gone into an asylum or similar

Hi,

Does the death certificate for Thomas Carl Jones in 1987 give any clues as to his wife's whereabouts? Was he a widower, who registered his death?

Assuming she died earlier a potential maybe - Mary F Jones Age 40 Dec Quarter 1951  East Ham Vol 5a page 26. Or is it possible her death could have been registered with the surname Watson - Mary F Watson Age 55 March Quarter 1967 Birmingham Vol 9c Page 346

Both a bit of a long shot I'm afraid.

Alan

The 1951 death was Mary Frances Jones

Unfortunately the deaths gap in GRO online includes 1967 so can't check what the F stands for

Yes I have it. It simply says that after hearing the evidence of the person's involved, the adoption was allowed to procede. I wonder if the county court involved might have a full transcript in their archive?

Just a thought re reason for adoption.  As it was wartime - if the husband was serving in the forces - many wives had affairs resulting in illegitimate births.
