Hi Guys,
PLEASE.... can anyone help?
I have a Laurentis Elgy (1570 - 1594)
married a (mrs) Laurence Elgye (1570- ?) in 1570.
They had 3 children:
John (Johannis) Elgye (1594 - 1678)
Lawrence Elgie (1596 - 1601)
Elizabeth Elgy (1599 - ?)
(all christened at St Cuthberts Church, Durham)
As you can see all the children would be after his death, and i can not seem to find a burial for him.
as i dont know the name of his wife, i cannot search for her records either.
Also i cant find details of his birth.... im assuming that he came from Italy, (with the name Laurentis and his son named Johannis)
Is there anyway of finding records for this man?
Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope that someone may be able to point me in the right direction.
Many Thnaks

There isn't a St. Cuthbert's Church in Durham City?
Did you mean St. Cuthbert's, Darlington, County Durham?

No, it is just Latin which is usual for parish registers from that time.

What do you have that tells you Laurence died in 1594?

What is the source for the info you have given
You say Laurentis was both born and married in 1570?
If you are unable to find a burial what is it you have to verify when he died?
and if all the children were born after he died then, apart from the first one he can't have been the father.
If you can share the source of your info we can check it out and 'perhaps' find the right track

The baptisms you refer to took place at St Cuthberts, Darlington, not Durham.
As Boo has said, you need to look carefully at the dates you’ve quoted as they don’t tie up at all.

Durham records on line have a marriage for a Laurentius Elgye to a Margareta Stainsby in Darlington in 1591
A Laurentius Elgye was buried in Darlington in 1613 and a Margareta Elgye was buried Darlington in 1615

I was going to say that the Joiner Index is showing a marriage in 1591 for L.E. but you have done the trick!! Very lucky, as apparently the surviving registers date from 1590.
