Good morning folks
Hope all is well with everyone
We have had plenty of rain over the last few days, but we are lucky as some have been badly affected.
Up very early this morning, think the hour is taking effect, up so early think I might even squeeze an extra meal in, only joking, trying to put breakfast off for an hour or so,.
People around have decorated their houses for Halloween, never really taken much notice before but it seems a big thing now, me, well , for 31st am in, won't answer the door to anyone but I think nowadays youngsters will only knock on doors where there are signs that they are taking part, .
Enjoy your day folks

Never liked Hallowe'en or bonfire night - perhaps it's the general dreariness of this time of year? I put a nice laminated notice on the front porch window, requesting no "Trick or Treat" visits. Usually works - might be the evil witch on it??
TY
-
I, too, put out the notice in the porch AND just to be on the safe side I make sure that the door is locked! Not very sure that this is necessary these days as I don't think we have any youngish children in the road. However, I do acknowledge the time of year by putting my "autumn" display in that area - toadstools, elves, pumpkins, autumn leaves, acorns etc. - an idea I collected from trips to Belgium many years ago and most of the items bought there and in Northern France. Spring display is Easter eggs (plastic and bought in Belgium/France) and these also adorn the tree in my front garden, summer is my sunbathing mermaids and then of course, Christmas. Oh dear, better get on with making the Christmas cards :-X
-
I have a feeling nowadays if you don't have any signs up you won't be bothered, I used to do it till I had a group of teenagers, had no idea where they came from but they took the lot, never again
LM
-
No need for a notice :D
I live in a flat in an old Victorian Town House.
The intercom system has never worked!
So there is no way for any visitors to contact the residents!
Those who need to come in, ring the resident first.
-
I don't answer the door after dark unless expecting someone. They never seem to bother me. It takes me a while to get to the door so they would probably give up waiting anyway.
-
I’m very unsociable and make sure there’s no lights showing at the front of the house when it’s this time of year. ( our lounge is across the back of the house. ) Mind you there’s not many young families on our estate now , we’ve all been here many years and stayed put!
-
We have stayed put, it was a new estate and we had lots of young families when we moved here, many have moved on or sadly passed away, a few young families have moved in but we don't see a lot of them, I will batten down the hatches , only have one set of lights on and won't answer the door, I don't have any signs out to encourage anyone to call
LM
-
Fortunately we live in a small village so don’t get lots of children coming round… not that I’d encourage those who do live here. There’s usually a note that comes round with a pumpkin picture that you can put in the window of you don’t mind callers… nothing this year do either no one’s organised it or there are no small children!
I’ve never liked the idea much and it certainly wasn’t something that was popular when my children were younger now 46 & 48!
My grandsons dress up and they visit their friends homes and those in the cul de sac they live in and my daughter goes with them, living in Ealing not wise to let them go out on their own.. they love it all and the houses in the road all decorate the gardens and outside! I expect I’ll get sent a couple of pics tomorrow!
Caroline
-
My grandchildren would dress up, come here, then my neighbour , who enjoys it, then on to their other grandmother and that was all , probably to their friends , my grandson was always very frightened of clowns so my daughter dressed him as a clown at Halloween.
I was mentioning recently that we don't see "penny for the guy " we were never allowed to do it as children.

Tonight is Hop-Tu-Naa on the Isle of Man.
Better known as Samhain or Halloween.
Manx people will carve moots into lanterns. In Scotland, Ireland and the North of England these are called turnips. In Southern England they are Swedes, and in USA they are Rutabaga.
Whatever you call today, and whatever you carve into lanterns, stay safe, and have fun!
-
Some idiot continuity announcer today 31st spoke of today being "All Saints Day" !!!!What on earth will she call Nov 1st?
TY

You have the first choice!!!! :)

Son brought his two youngsters to visit this week. I haven't seen them for a while due to their parents successfully getting them into a nursery.
The three year old is very tall and could be mistaken for a five year old. I obliged her and sang umpteen choruses of "Old Macdonald Had a Farm" I must have done quite a lot of head actions because my brain felt as though it was swimming after they left/
I was astonished to hear on the news today that primary school teachers are expected to changed the diapers/nappies of five year old primary school children! When I had young children I had the advantage of them mixing with children aged a few months to six years old, which meant they learnt from the older children - and included in those lessons was new vocabulary, how to act and how and when to ask for the potty/chamber pot or the toilet.
-
In my opinion by 5 years and children should be clean and dry unless they have a problem
LM
-
Quite agree LM…teachers have enough to deal with without having to provide a basic need that parents should have sorted before they start school!
Going back to Halloween… true to form I got pictures from my daughter of out two grandsons dressed up.. youngest as grim reaper ( costume I made him last year from a black sheet)…and he’s informed her that he’ll wear it next year too! Might need some length adding to it… but like his frugal mind! The eldest was a ghost , old white sheet holes cut out.. glad to see she’s not spending a fortune on silly costumes that will get thrown away!
Well I don’t know what’s happened to the latest storm, but we’ve only had rain in the night with a bit of wind and so far today all seems ok.. if a little grey looking but the sun is trying to break through..
Looking at what others have experienced my heart goes out to everyone and hope that all RC’s and families haven’t been badly hit.
Well off to the hospital today to see a man about my arthritic back… not holding out any hopes, I expect I’ll be told it’s age related! I just keep doing my Pilates and walking … I’m was very surprised to have received an appointment when only being referred in July.
Quick question .. have people turned on their central heating yet?
Have a good day and stay safe

Here in Devon heavy rain is lashing down and most of the leaves have now blown down from the trees over the past few days. We made a quick dash down to the supermarket in our nearest town this morning and encountered several partially flooded roads. We'll wait and see what Storm Ciaran brings as the day wears on. but I think it's supposed to clear up a bit this afternoon. The nearby sea wall has been strengthened in preparation for the worst, and people are putting up their flood defences. Mud from tractor wheels and fallen leaves are blocking drains and causing floods in some places. Not the best weather for bonfires and fireworks.
-
So what became of the instructions we were given re touching children?
We were not allowed to gently get a child in line ,nor change a child who had an “ accident” ie left it too late to ask for the toilet!!!!
These were four year olds.
It was ridiculous, a soiled child whose parents both worked and had no transport and having to leave their job to get a soiled child home perhaps on a bus!!!!
I can remember having to isolate the Home Corner, and spend my lunchtime scrubbing with disinfectant everything in it, borrowing the Nursery ‘s washing machine for dolls’ clothes and bedding, curtains and anything fabric.
But the poor little mite who had the ‘ accident” we just had to isolate until his Daddy came .
How humiliating when a simple clean up of him in the Nursery utility room, in private would have been so much kinder and hygienic too!
There are some daft people in high places !- But when you think of their salaries!!!!Daylight Robbery .
We know there are people who molest children and often in plain sight, and didn’t they get away with it,two recent T,V programmes show very well the enormity of the problem.
But in Nurseries, you can’t leave a young baby (and oh his young they are taken in nowadays -) all day without a nappy change and a bottom washing ready for a clean nappy !!!!
The world has gone mad, on one hand children acting, dressing and thinking they have adult rights ,but when they get in a bus and ask f or “ A child’s day return”—— with skirts up to their b—s ,false eyelashes etcetcetc.
All the old people raise eyebrows and shake heads ,we don’t understand the disparity.
Oh dear was it ever thus,I don’t remember it .
A can’t make its mind up day today, washing in due to bright sunshine earlier, but raining again now!
Hope all are O.K. I know many have ongoing problems which affect your daily lives but you are a stoical lot and seem to get on with things never the less.
It is the only way really isn’t it .
I need to shop today.
I hope this gets through, none of my posts seem to arrive lately, I have sent replies to posts but where they are heaven only knows .
Cheerio,Viktoria.

I hope everyone is safe, just spoken to my brother in Devon who says he is not to bad but it was very windy last night .
Some I believe think a child will be clean when it wants to but it needs guidance, some are slow learners, they are all different but I would assume by the time they are 5 they should be clean , it is an added responsibility for the staff, I always assumed in nurseries there was always 2 staff to change a baby.
We had a burst of sun but it didn't last long, more rain.
Keep dry and safe folks
LM
-
Not sure about two staff for a nappy change L.M certainly not in the far off days when I did my training ,the occasion I wrote about was The Reception Class.4-5 year olds , some years later.
My three were all dry and clean at about 18 months ,just did it casually , no hassle ,pottied at regular times ,if they obliged a little praise but no hint of annoyance when accidents occurred. Strangely they were all dry at night before daytime ,my daughter used to blame someone else when she had the odd accident “ Whobody did that!” —- “ Youbody “ —- “ No,not mebody” —- “ “Then you won’t need dry panties “—- a little while later—- “ I think it might have been mebody” —- “Let’s go to the bathroom and wash you and put dry panties on then.”
She had ever so many pairs of panties,in Belgium people buy in bulk!
It was much cheaper to buy panties when the boys were small instead of proper iunderpants and they knew no difference but when they started school they got “ grown up “underpants in case someone at the communal toileting times noticed. How many kids today would be delighted to start school because they had proper underpants!
Well some ironing to do from yesterday’s washing, today’s washing still in the machine as it is chucking it down .
So better get on with it .
Viktoria.
-
VIKTORIA, I think the 2 members of staff at nursery was for, what can I call it, security, and quite right too,
Yes, chucking it down here, miserable day, the lights will go on soon and it is only 15.38

We had a Yellow Weather Warning for heavy rain, 6am to midnight today.
Roads are dry - not a drop!

We had a Yellow Weather Warning for heavy rain, 6am to midnight today.
Roads are dry - not a drop!
Oh, dear, you shouldn't have said that! Tempting fate! But I hope not. :)
-
Well a nice sunny morning but a bit chilly, did some washing yesterday but so much rain after a sunny start,I had to leave it in the machine so just refreshed it this morning with a rinse and it is on the line in the sunshine .
A quick tea tonight I think, smoked salmon tagliatelle ,so need some olives and interesting bread .
I need a bit of shopping ,would like to walk down but son tries to help so said he would be free around lunchtime.
I am losing the ability to walk very far ,I do explain but it falls on deaf ears!
I hope no one had any damage to their property from the awful weather we have had.It really is freakish and almost defies the forecasts sometimes.
I have not found my missing posts , no idea what has happened, wonder if I neglected to tap on “ Post” ..?
Not heard from my little friend , wonder if her daughter has at last paid a visit but being in Cumbria perhaps has her own problems re the weather.
I won’t ask my friend she will only worry ,but things like personal aids and blister packed medications would be so handy ,but she does not know about them, seemingly nor does her daughter.
I might pop round today ,just to check ,I have said she can come anytime ,but sadly she forgets so much ( says she who forgot her grand daughter’s
Birthday on Monday! :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[.
Funny calendar, the last two days were in a corner very tiny!Well that’s my excuse, I transferred cash via the phone ,she is off to Denmark ,so that will be handy.
Got flights for £40!and hotel for £135, it is a long weekend , but how lovely ,she has always wanted to see The Little Mermaid in the Harbour ,from stories we told her.
Well work and a cuppa for my son and then shopping etc.
I feel lucky I can do all that , in peace and security.
There is a lot to be thankful for.
Hope everyone is safe and as well as our ages etc allow.
Viktoria.

Meetings were cancelled and schools closed yesterday because of the weather, but we were lucky in that there was no severe flooding near to us. Wind seems to have been more of a problem, with roof tiles being blown off and trees blown down. Today it's calmer and so far the sun is shining, but it's rather chilly. I shall soon warm up. however, as I will be cleaning the house this morning and ironing this afternoon. My husband will be going up in the loft to bring down our stock of Christmas cards and decorations so that I can see how many are left over from last year and order some more. I already have my diary and calendar for next year.
Time to make Christmas puddings and cakes and start buying jars of mincemeat, I think. Last year I made my own mincemeat and it was a disaster, even though I followed a Good Housekeeping recipe to the letter.
-
I have been to Teignmouth for the weekend celebrating my birthday with my twin brother, their sea front has been really bashed about this week, slabs and wall knocked down along the prom, very sad,
This morning about 08.30 we walked along the prom watching the waves splash over, lots of people out and it was only minor compared to last few days, we travelled home, 5 hours most of the way in beautiful sun, only to hear our dear grandaughter had written off her car in an accident, a large lorry ran into the back of her, the car is an absolute mess, but she is safe , she is a sweetheart ringing to thank me for sending her a message.
Well, another week gone, where is the time going?
Hope everyone if safe and coping with weather conditions

Had a surprise visit from Grandson and family, they wanted fish and chips,a rare treat for them nowadays in rural Suffolk .
Kyra is two on 10th,and what a change from the visit a short while ago, knew all her primary colours this time and colours like lime green and turquoise,
we’re “ black”.
Came up the path shouting “ Ganma, Ganma”.
I had just sent a parcel to them as well , never mind ,I gave the Birthday card and a cheque, had sent books.
A nice service at Church , All Saints’ Day.
There were candles for us to light in remembrance of loved ones and we were given slips of paper and pens to write names of those who had influenced us for good .
I remembered the kind people with whom I had been evacuated, my parents and my husband .
It really was a nice service.
Had chicken breasts wrapped in bacon ,with herby potato slices green beans and broccoli ,we don’t do sweets.
Number one son came to help his brother with something , I was wanting for the fighting to start,——- at one time they could not be in the same room!
Saw something awful yesterday,a woman was coming out of a shop with two whippet dogs, one dog first, then the woman who was talking to her friend ,then the second dog but the woman absent mindedly closed the shop door
before the dog was fully out ,she trapped its left hind foot in the door which she almost fully closed!!!
Oh the screams —- I had hesitated as the woman and her friend took up a lot
if room ,I shouted “ You have trapped its foot in the door “ ——
Such tiny fragile bones,oh it did bleed and the toes were all out of place .
I directed them to the Vet’s ,where at least there is always a notice where the nearest Emergency Service is if our Vet is closed.
Got some very old maps out today, Reading Engels’ “The Condition of the Working Class”, I dip into it ,have old maps of Manchester and love tracing actual streets.None of my rellies lived in any streets mentioned.
Close by though.
I am proud of that .
Well a relatively quiet Bonfire Night , hope there have been no accidents this year.
Cheerio folks,new diary tomorrow .
Hope all are well ,nice to hear of Birthday celebrations ,sorry to hear of your Grand daughter’s car write off L.M.But she is alright so you will be very thankful for that.
My mother’s anniversary tomorrow, 1957, she was 61, my first son was six months old, but she had held him the day before her heart attack .
When I recall my treatment and compare ,she was sadly very neglected.
Left at home ,no oxygen or ,clot busters , scans not yet invented etc.
No hospital admittance until I insisted the G,P got her admitted , but that was a week later.Too late.
How things have improved.
Goodnight folks.
Viktoria.
-
Relieved to say that it has been a very quiet night - or is it that Bonfire Night is no longer celebrated?
-
It has been very quiet here but we were away last night so I don't know what went on here
In Teignmouth they did have an organised display but I was busy eating out so missed it, apparently very enjoyable.
I don't think there are so many organised displays now
LM
-
No bonfires here - and few fireworks.
Guy Fawkes was not a part of Manx History!
But I do miss the Somerset Illuminated Carnivals at this time of year.
-
Lots of fireworks here over the weekend, our road had a get together. Firework display in the town was replaced by a drone display.
Our carnival was in September and not illuminated
-
KGarrad
I watched the Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival live on the net on Saturday evening.
The procession was estimated to be 2 miles long! What a spectacle.
Corryn
-
Organised firework displays are so much safer and more spectacular .
It is pretty dangerous when you think, even a pretty sparkler can be really dangerous.
So really a pretty quiet night here but a few weeks ago a near neighbour did have some sort of party and there were a lot then.
Other neighbours complained because they had no idea and so cats were not kept in nor nervous dogs sedated in advance if necessary.
Well guess what folks,it is raining!
Oh so much rain.
I don’t know about trips to the moon it is about time someone got excess rain water from my garden to The Sahara!
There was a plan ages ago to tow icebergs from the Arctic, but The Arctic now has its own problems!
Another scheme was to plant trees, in North Africa, gradually getting closer to the desert,on the basis that trees seemingly attract rain, I expect now Hadrian’s Wall will suffer from drought ——- by the way, arrests re the felling of the tree!
Well ironing calls so T.V on .
Where can I get a really good sized ironing board cover,? most are too small ,my board is broad and good for ironing bed linen .but it is very brown at the iron rest end.
Problems problems!
Look after yourselves ,
Viktoria.
-
I bought a larger ironing board cover from (S,) supermarket, I have also made them in the past
LM
-
Thanks L.M, what did you use for padding ?
This one is a sort of sponge ,in a cotton cover, elastic at at the pointy end.
Only thin but was very effective .Badly scorched at the wide end,in fact it is a disgrace! :-[
A few have come up at b&m,so one in Bury and another on the way to Bury going the long way round.
Thanks again.
Viktoria.
-
I used an old sheet folded a few times, also used a blanket, you can pad it as much as you like I think as long as you give yourself enough material to cover it, I saw a thing recently that showed if you can open your board and lay it on the floor or a table, draw round it giving a really good hem, hem and put thin elastic through, It will cover whatever you pad it with, might need a bit of a tug but your son might help you, I don't like the sponge, this pattern it worked for me.
Good luck Viktoria

I usually did the Weston-Super-Mare carnival, as mum & dad lived in Uphill.
Did Bridgwater once!
-
Thanks L.M.I might have a bash.
Glad you enjoyed the Fireworks K.G.
Just got the news from my lovely neighbour’s son in law, that she has died.
Unconscious for three days and just slipped away.
I am truly sorry, I did not visit her because she did not fret or ask about her home and her daughter was worried if her Mum remembered me she may be unsettled .
No idea as yet when the funeral will be or where, she worshipped at St,Joseph’s just near my former home .
We got on really well and had lots of laughs.
Viktoria.
-
Oh dear Viktoria, so sorry to hear about your friend, don't have any regrets, you were very kind and caring towards her, you couldn't do anymore, she is free from any pain and suffering now
LM
-
Yes,L.M. She was 90 my first summer here -2017,so 96.
I will get some more details re Funeral when her daughter has had a chance to get things organised.
I ‘ve missed her since she had to go into a home .
But a peaceful release. She deserved that.
Viktoria.
-
Sorry to hear about your friend Viktoria. I remember you used to plant up pots for her for her birthdays if I remember rightly.
Pinetree
-
Viktoria remember no one can ever take away your lovely memories of you friend, you can cherish the memories for ever.
LM
-
Yes I did Pinetree, and watered them in the evenings, her front garden was completely flagged over so just the two large pots with flowers,I used trailing lobelias mixed colours, geraniums , Alyssum ,etc ,they got lots of sunshine and brightened the front garden a bit ,something for her to see as she sat all day by the window.
We have had some laughs ,the number of times she has burnt the toast, let pans boil dry etc and could not manage the smoke alarm!!!!
Then did not remember she had a fridge when I took her weekly treat of a trifle, loved it when I took a slice of sponge cake round after baking..
Her daughter had every gadget under the sun set up for pills etc but she beat them all!
But a good life and a most pleasant neighbour .
Her daughter will be really broken, she did all anyone could have done.
Not sure the new neighbour willl be so nice ( my son!) . ;D
Well bedtime and I still miss the bathroom sounds in the night ,I would listen to see if she was O.K. She had a few falls.
Good night everyone, thanks for the kind messages, I was so sorry not to visit her but she was very settled and did not ask about her home and I might have brought that to her mind and then she would not have been so content.
Goodnight.Viktoria.
-
Sorry to hear about your friend Viktoria, she is at peace now. You have all your lovely memories of her.
-
Viktoria- so very sorry to hear about your neighbour, always sad to lose a friend. I’m sure whilst she was living at home you brightened up her life and anyone would be delighted to have a kind and thoughtful person such as yourself living next door.
As others have said you have all those memories.
My best wishes to you and hope your new neighbour turns out ok!!!
Caroline
-
Yes Viktoria, your new neighbour, give him a few rules and regulations to be a good neighbour to you, only joking but I am sure he will be ok,
LM
-
Thanks everyone, well my new neighbour is not too old to have his legs smacked, -either that or I will confiscate all his toys!
He and his brother are on a mission to restore all their Dinky,Matchbox and Corgi toys, cars, tractors, combine harvesters, fire engines, army vehicles etc!
They played properly with them in sand and mud etc ,no pristine ones, but they were bought to play with.
I find it sad that such action toys are to be found looking hardly used.
He does do jobs for me ,little repairs etc . It will be years before he moves in though, a nit picker if ever there was one ,well his brother is one too.
I can do all sorts of jobs as my O.H was really inept at practical jobs ,(but a treasure in other ways, aaaaaw!)
A dry, bright day here after a night of torrential rain ,so washing in and I must make a cheese and onion pie for tea, I had just two slices of cucumber yesterday with the salad I had and I paid for it all night!
For that reason it is years since I ate cucumber.
No funeral details as yet ,might be private , our local Bury Times will most probably have details in the Friday issue, but her daughter will surely let me know.
My son was working on the computers upstairs when my neighbour’s son in law called to tell me , but he heard what was said and ran after him to say how sorry he was ,which I thought was very kind .
So I might not smack his legs today, although all his siocks needed opening up and turning the right way!Men!
Daughter phoned as usual last night ,Kyra, now then—- has discovered she can climb up using the smooth sliding out kitchen drawers !
Was perched on the worktop.Last seen playing on the floor.
Later she was missing again,- somewhere in the house - whilst my daughter loaded the washer. She was with my daughter “ helping “‘putting socks in ,then just moved away, washer started and she had gone .
In the bath, just sitting there, thank goodness the taps are really hard to turn on .
However she got in is a mystery. She is so independent ,a good trait in many ways.
She is two on Friday. Looks much younger,is so tiny like her Mummy, but “ All there with the lemon drops”, an old Lancashire saying for someone quick and bright.
Well ,things to do like boil onions, grate cheese make pastry etc
Thanks again for your kind words, I am only sorry it was not possible to see my neighbour but her mental well-being was of greater importance ,she was settled and happy.
Cheerio.Viktoria.
P.S my other little friend is now having tests, it looks like a serious condition,
she is really ill, but at home as far as I know, stays in bed most of the time, she can’t hear the doorbell upstairs but the last time I checked she had sent samples off, and was having a scan., just as I had to do ( mine were perfectly OK) . Her daughter’s cancelled visit must have taken place later than the original plan and her other daughter who was not really involved now seems to be more helpful.
I can’t visit if she is in bed most of the time and not sure if she has an upstairs phone ,but anyway she never manages my “ call blocker “, just does not understand the instructions .
However I got the ball rolling and her Dr,involved ,it is up to the family now.
I have finally convinced her that drinking more water is so beneficial in many ways. Her question then was “ What time do I have to drink it?”
Such little understanding ,but someone to be admired for her stoicism and
determination to be as independant as possible , it is a good job in many ways she does not understand ,at least she is not worrying about the worst scenario.
I hope I m wrong in what I think it is.
Cheerio really this time.
Look after yourselves.
Viktoria.
-
Well ,just got a phone call from my little friend’s daughter, she is in a Rest Home , about a week and will be assessed, then depending on results either back home or carers going in .
Her symptoms were such that being at home was not really realistic, given her almost total blindness and so inability to cope with the results.
I am glad she will have care and be observed for a while ,I did not ask about her symptoms , so no idea exactly how she is.
I hope I can visit her but it is not local.
Cheerio, Viktoria.
Oooooer,I have realised I am still in last week!
Must look for the new diary!M.
