I've got a James Anderson, who was apparently born in 1846 or 1847 in Bath, but I can't find any possible birth registration, nor any likely record of him before 1881.
The first I have of him is from the 1881 Census for Sunderland. He's listed as living at 45 Hendon Street in Sunderland, birth year estimated 'about 1850' (Ancestry), and apparently married to Mary Ann Anderson (b. 1847).
The couple had at least 2 children, Edward (b. December 1879), Alfred (b. May 1883). Both born in Sunderland. Mary Ann's maiden name was BAILEY.
A third child James Anderson is also listed, 5 years old, in 1881. I can't find a birth record for him either, and he seems to be limited to that census.
Mary Ann, by the way, was married to an Edward COE from Essex (who died in 1873), he fathered at least 3 children to her, Isabella Ann (b. 1864), Mary Ann (b. 1867) and Georgeine (b. 1872). They are listed as step children of James in 1881.
James appears once again in the 1891 census, 'aged 44', husband of Mary Ann, and the father of Edward and Alford (sic). No other occupants. James is recorded as having died in 1895.
I have no reason to suspect James Anderson ever used any other name, but that's a possibility worth not losing sight of entirely.

Hi,
I found this marriage,
Mary Ann COE Dec Q 1874 Sunderland 10a 936
James LEE
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXGP-PFW
01 Nov 1874 Bishop-Wearmouth, Durham
James LEE
Father: William LEE
Mary Ann COE
Father: Alexander BAILEY
and this birth which could be the 5 year old James ANDERSON shown in the 1881 census,
James LEE Jun Q 1876 Sunderland 10a 670
mmn: BAILEY
So who is James LEE? Is he James ANDERSON or did Mary marry James LEE and then James ANDERSON?
I can't find a marriage that fits.
Sorry to make it more complicated.
Regards,
Daisy

The only James LEE born in Somerset around that time with a father William that I can find, was baptised at Bridgwater in May 1848 along with his twin Emily. Parents were William LEE and Mary Ann DYER.
LEE, JAMES MURRY mmn DYER
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in BRIDGWATER UNION Volume 10 Page 369
William was a mariner and died in Bridgwater in 1858.

This James was with his parents in Bridgwater in 1851 and his mother in Bridgwater in 1861. Can't find him after that.
Be interesting to see what William's occupation was on the James LEE/Mary Ann COE marriage in 1874.

Registration for the children of James Lee aka Anderson and Mary Ann formerly Coe late Bailey.
James LEE reg 1876 mmn Bailey reg Sunderland (as previously posted by Daisypetal)
George Edward LEE mmn Bailey reg Easington 1881 (ref: 1881 census)
Alfred ANDERSON mmn Bailey reg Sunderland 1883
So father James changed his name after 1881 and before 1883
Perhaps check the papers and see if something happened to make him do this.

Minor nitpick, George Edward Anderson was not registered as 'LEE'. He was born in 1879 in Sunderland and registered as 'HENDERSON', presumably a transcription error for ANDERSON.
D Quarter 1879:
HENDERSON, George Edward - reg Sunderland - mmn BAILEY
It's far more consistent with census records.

Be interesting to see what William's occupation was on the James LEE/Mary Ann COE marriage in 1874.
Just to add the marriage transcription describes James as a widower so he had a previous marriage which might add some light.

It is most interesting that you should mention that, the potential father of James Anderson being a mariner, as the 'deaths at sea' records list Mary Ann's deceased former husband (who was called Edward Coe) as a mariner.
It's possible that James may have had such a background too.
