Good Morning
Have you noticed his burial at Beckley?
Joseph Larkin of Beckley buried 11th March 1825 .born 1739
Also at Beckley are a couple George and Mary Larkin nee Stoneham married 3.6.1762 at Beckley.
George buried 8.7.1799 and Mary 27.1.1801. A Nice Will for George a yeoman of Northiam.
But there are christenings for Joseph and George over at Bendenden St George.
Joseph 28.9.1738 s of William and Frances Larkin and George 25.12.1733.
other children William 22.2.1736 ,Frances 11.4.1742 and Sarah (as Larking at Cranbrook) 23.5.1745.
Sadly it looks like Frances died in childbirth 23.5.1745 Cranbrook
While William lived on to be be buried there 6.11.1774.
The couple had married at Cranbrook 10.4.1732
William Larkin and Frances Ballard both of this parish.
It seems Frances was named after her granny
Hope that helps
ps in 1799 Joseph is living in a cottage at Beckley owned by a John Stonham.A relative by marriage perhaps?

Thanks
Joseph and Sarah are my 6th great grand parents
I have all info back to Joseph!
Marriage to Sarah no date and then it's all a bit Hit and miss With his birth parents!
20 years ago when i started my ancestry quest Joseph was logged as being born in Swanscombe Kent
All records destroyed in floods
I think it could have been Swattenden Cranbrook!
Horsmonden has nipped in and out of my searches

Frances Larkin - baptism 23rd June 1765 in Beckley - Only has fathers name as Joseph
3 years before Joseph married Sarah Simmons - 1768
Cannot find confirmed marriage date between Joseph and Sarah
Maybe Sarah's name was not Simmons!
I have found a Sarah Simmons bap. 3rd February 1743 Northiam
I found a Frances Larkin married a James Stevens 9th May 1784 Beckley - also known as Fanny
My line is Joseph and Sarah's son Joseph Larkins b-1771 Beckley m- Elizabeth Coleman b-1768 Brede
confirming Joseph and Sarah's marriage would help but doesn't seem to be registered in Beckley

Hello Rob
Can we backtrack a bit on this please?
Where did you get the information that Joseph married a Sarah Simmons?
Can you give us the baptism records for each of Joseph's children as I don't have access to Beckley baptisms. This will help build up a clearer picture of your family.

Hi Barbara

I am doubtful about Sarah being Simmons but I have no other leads

Thanks for the baptism information cider.

Hi Barbara
Sorry about that i was working
Same as Ciderman has given - baptisms of Joseph and Sarah's children
My original info 22 years ago for Joseph was born 1743 Swanscombe Kent (Dartford) was from family search (latter days saints) but very vague as was most info back then.
All records were damaged or destroyed in a flood!
since then that info has been removed!
After a fair bit of searching for Joseph Larkin born Swanscombe i had nothing
I think a couple trees put his parents as Thomas Larkin and Elizabeth Heyward but as you know there Joseph had died shortly after birth, but as usual others copied onto their trees without checking!
I then thought that maybe Swattenden in Cranbrook sounding similar to Swanscombe may be a link
but still a dead end!
As for Sarah Simmons that name also appeared in trees on ancestry with no source at all??
With no confirmed birth or baptism date for Joseph, with only having Sarah with no birth surname or a marriage date/ record for Joseph and Sarah i have hit a bit of a brick wall
I think finding his marriage would be a start at least that would give Sarah's name
There is a George of similar age born in Cranbrook to John Larkin and Elizabeth Morgan
i think it may be the same George who also lived in Beckley with his wife Mary?
I do have pretty much most info on my direct line up to Joseph
A lot to think about but maybe you could clear a couple of bits up
I have just finished the basics on my 5th GGP Joseph Larkins b 1771 and Elizabeth Coleman
and the Inmans (yacht builders)

Hi Rob
I am drawing a blank on a marriage for Joseph.
As to his parents I am favouring William Larkin and Frances Ballard as described by cider drinker.
William was the youngest son of George Larkin and his wife Elizabeth Sares/Sayres.
William's older brother John Larkin who married Elizabeth Morgan is my direct ancestor. This couple did have a son named George but he married Mary Turner and later moved to Horsmonden. Again, my direct family.
Another brother of William and John was Thomas, the father of the twins mentioned in the earlier posts. This Thomas was married to Elizabeth Dine in Rye on 5 March 1738/39 He owned property in Beckley some of which he passed on to his oldest son Thomas. Thosmas and Elizabeth Dine had another son named Benjamin who had children baptised in Beckley.
So there is definitely a link between the Cranbrook Larkins and the parish of Beckley.
I have not tracked the children of William Larkin and Frances Ballard but I think the George Larkin who lived in Beckley is one of their sons and Joseph another.
I am no longer a member of the Sussex FH Group so do not have access to thier databases. I think it could be useful to check all the Beckley Larkin names and reconstruct the families there.
I will have a look at some of the wills that I have in case there are any more clues.

Hi Barbara
Yes i do think thats the closest link so far
William Larkin - m - Frances Ballard 10th April 1732 Cranbrook
Children all born in Benenden -
George 1733
William 1735/36
Joseph 1738
Frances 1742
All we need is a marriage for Joseph ?
I think a bit of foot work is coming up
I think William Larkin b - 1706 was born in Goudhurst if the same his father George born in Marden?
Funny enough that takes me to my mothers family the Collins and Fevers from Marden

Hi again Rob.
Some more information for you.
George Larkin and Elizabeth Sayres married in Brenchley on 3 November 1685.
They had 5 children there:
Elizabeth 24 October 1686
Mary 20 January 1688/89 buried 22 January 1688/89
Mary 6 January 1689/90
Martha 3 January 1692/3
Sarah 24 August 1695
They baptised 5 more children in Goudhurst:
John 17 Oct 1697 - my direct ancestor.
George 21 October 1699
Thomas 25 December 1701 note: father George reported to be a farmer
William 2 April 1704 buried 8 June 1705
William 16 June 1706
George was Overseer of the Poor in Goudhurst in 1720.
The family moved to Cranbrook around 1720-1723. George Larkin appeared for the first time in the Cranbrook Overseers Accounts books on 30 August 1723 paying rates on property assessed at £38 in the area of Cranbrook called Glassenbury and regularly from that date.
George Larkin senior was buried 22 October 1729 in Cranbrook. He did not leave a will but his estate was administered by his wife. Her forename not stated in the administration.
Elizabeth was buried 29 April 1742. She did leave a will which was proved in the Archdeaconry Court of Canterbury on 6 October 1742.
As to George Larkin’s origins I have not come to a firm conclusion. Certainly the Marden George is a possibility.
Elizabeth Sayres is easier to trace and she descends from John Ferrall vicar of Brenchley who was buried there in 1593.
If you are a descendant of William Larkin b 1706 then we are distantly related. George Larkin and Elizabeth Sayres our common ancestors were my 7 x great grandparents!
I still need to check the wills I have but my recollection is that none mention William Larkin husband of Frances Ballard.

Hi Barbara
Thanks
I have the Goudhurst children for George but not the Brenchley
I have family on my mother's side from Glassenbury part of Cranbrook so know it well!
I think it's almost certain that Joseph from Benenden is my Joseph as his death record it has his birth year as about 1739
I Will keep looking for his marriage!
I cannot find anything in the sussex marriage records in case they married in Beckley
Benenden has not come up either
Rob

Yes, the marriage is a mystery at present. Have you only looked at transcriptions of the Beckley records? Some entries may have been missed by the transcriber or deciphered wrongly. Also, sometimes events are not recorded chronologically. If there are Bishops Transcripts they would be worth checking too.
Have you looked for a will for Joseph?
Barbara
-
I have checked the wills of Elizabeth Larkin widow of George, John Larkin and Thomas Larkin her sons and those of Thomas Larkin and George Larkin her grandsons. Unfortunately there is no mention of William or his children.
It might be worth looking at Frances Ballard's parentage in case that throws up some useful wills.
Final thought - have you found a burial for Joseph's wife Sarah?
Barbara
-
Hi Barbara
Thanks for looking
I am looking as we speak for Sarah's burial
No joy so far
Looked at national archives and found a couple of bits of where a Joseph Larkin of Beckley lived
