Title: Huguenots in Scotland
Post by: TessieCapn on Wednesday 11 October 23 20:34 BST (UK)
Does anyone know of a list of Huguenot surnames that can be found in Scotland? Our family lore says we have a Huguenot background and I have traced a direct ancestor named Moncur, whose son John was born in either 1710 or 1711 in Scotland (two boys named John were born in those two years, to brothers Robert and William Moncur) listed in parochial registers of Kinneff and Catterline) and emigrated to Virginia in 1733. Rev. John Moncure was inducted much later into the Virginia Huguenot Society but they can't tell me why and I can't find a solid basis for the connection to French protestants. Any assistance would be welcome!

Black's 'The Surnames of Scotland' gives examples of Moncurs in Scotland as far back as the 13th century. A family of that name in Dundee were armourers in the 15th century. So the name predates the arrival of any Huguenots.

There is always the possibility of a Huguenot family arriving in Scotland and changing their surname to Moncur as it sounded close to their French name, However, I suspect that the Rev. John Moncure just fancied he had Huguenot ancestors on the grounds that his name sounded French

Is this the same Rev John Moncur mentioned here? https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LH7W-N29/rev.-john-moncure-1711-1764

Nothing is showing on the Old Parish Registers (OPRs) on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. There is a message stating on SP that searches must be within 1733-1855.

Find a Grave entry with similar info www.findagrave.com/memorial/45031012/john-moncure

Reference to the family and mention of their Huguenot origins in this document, which was published by the Virginia Historical Society in 1886 www.newrivernotes.com/hugenot-emigration-to-virginia-and-settlement-at-manakin-town/

Lack of actual sources so far though...
