Hello everyone I'm building my family tree and desperately need a wee bit of help please, this is what I'm looking for:
I have a marriage in Dunfanaghy, Donegal 24/9/1864 between Robert Mitchell and Hannah McDade/McDaid, I can't find any births or deaths for either of these two people.
Roberts father was called Walter and Hannahs father was called Dominick (no details on them whatsoever).
They had a son Joseph (GGF) approx 1874 died 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland married to Mary McCurdy.
I'm trying to find out where Joseph was born and did he have any siblings. Thanks for any help you can give.
Mary

Have you found Joseph on either the Irish or Scottish 1901/1911
Same question for Robert & Hannah
Irish censuses are free here

The 1911 & 1921 Scottish censuses are available on a pay per view basis on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Viewing either will give you his birthplace
-
I haven't found them on the census as yet but will keep my eyes open
-
I don't have credits but have you dismissed this one in 1921
MITCHELL, CATHERINE
age 13

CAMBUSLANG
LANARK
with the same reference there is
Joseph age 48
Mary age 30
Patrick 15
John 3
Edward 1
Joseph 9

Should be there as he died 1955 Cambuslang aged 82. SP is not a subscription site so although the index is free to search - you have to buy credits to view or download the entries/certificates
EDIT - Rosie has found them in 1921 so using that info should enable you to find them in 1911

Seems to be a regular thing for Irish Genealogy to be down on Sunday night but have you seen this birth of John Mitchell on Family Search
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QL34-J8VP?cid=fs_copy
May be worth having a look at the original of this one

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there won't be any birth certificates for the parents Robert and Hannah since they were married in 1864.
Family Search has most, not all, Irish births 1864-c1881 extracted and searchable with names of parents which is a great shortcut to finding the actual birth registrations. Just watch out for the 'birthplace' they list as they've really mucked up them. Doing a parents search shows only this child-
John (27 Sept.1864)

Here's the actual birth registration- Letterkenny is the registration district:

Daughter Susan born 1866 but mother now listed as Ellen not Hannah-

...and for both births the townland is Glenkeeragh.

Thank you so much !

Think I've found a death for Hannahs mother 28/12/1878 registered as a widow in Glenkeeragh

Hi Mary
Just so things don't confuse, I think there were two couples with the same surnames, Mitchell & McCurdy, having children at the same time, including Joseph and wife Mary McCurdy:
The Cambuslang births are:
1905 - Patrick...died in 1974 in Bellshill
1907 - Catherine...died in 1996 in Cambuslang
1909 - Mary
1912 - Joseph
1914 - Archibald
1917 - John...died in 1931 in Cambuslang
1920 - Edward...died in 2007 in Cambuslang
Just for ref, the Renfrew births showing are:
1901 - Margaret McCurdy
1904 - Emma Johnston
1905 - Emma Adelaide
1907 - Mary Ann McCurdy
1910 - Annie Hotchkiss
1911 - James McCurdy
Parents for these children may have been an Alexander Mitchell and Maggie McCurdy who married in Renfrew in 1891.
Rosie provided earlier the likely family entry in 1921. Again from the general index, this looks like them in Cambuslang in 1911:
Joseph 35
Mary 21
Patrick 5
Kate 3
You do need to look at the original image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the full entry.

Well done, thank you for all that searching and keeping me on the right path.

I have been researching the McCurdy part of this family, in Donegal, and have some specific detail that may have relevance to your searching ... re Alexander Mitchell [1870-1956] and Margaret Frances McCurdy [1872-1960] ... she being a daughter of Thomas McCurdy [1830-1914] and Barbara Johnston [1834-1910] ... he was a son of Thomas McCurdy [1785-1875] and Mary Ann Sawyers [1787-1875]. Barbara was a daughter of Robert Johston and Martha Couborn.
Just wondering which of Alexander Mitchell and Margaret McCurdy's children you descend from?
Hoping to her from you
Shane McCurdy, Magheralin, Northern Ireland

Sorry I can't find a link to these people that you mention, maybe I'm overlooking something. Joseph Mitchell born 1874 in Donegal died 1955 in Glasgow married Mary McCurdy 1905 in Glasgow. That's the nearest I have.
-
MonicaL mentioned Alexander and Margaret in post #19, to warn you there was two couples with the same surname so not to get them confused.
Confusion appears to be what has just happened.
-
Yes looks like it.
-
My apologies - quite right too ..
Mary McCurdy [1890] married Joseph Mitchell [1873 - 1955] on 20 February 1905 at St Charles’ Chapel, Newton, Cambuslang after publication according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church by Louis De Meulanaire in the presence of John McCurdy and Lizzie Cannon (he was a son of Robert Mitchell, farmer, and Hannah McDade, both of whom were, in 1905, deceased) he was a steelworker, aet 30, from Flanagan’s Building, Westburn, Cambuslang (he signed with his X mark), and she was aet 15, living at 24 Dunlop Street, Newtown, Cambuslang. They were living at Cambuslang in 1911C - he was aet 35 and Mary was aet 21, and again in 1921C. He died aet 82, his death being registered in Cambuslang
in turn, we have:
Archibald McCurdy [1846/9 - 2 January 1897] married Catherine Murphy [1860 - 1918] on 23 October 1874 in St. Francis Chapel, Cumberland Street, Glasgow, after banns according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church by Antonine Scannell in the presence of Eugene Harrington and Ann Murphy (she was a daughter of Daniel Murphy, an iron work labouer, (deceased), and Janet McAulay) he was an iron work furnacement, and a widower, aet 33, of 293 Thistle Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow and she was a domestic servant, aet 26, also living at 2923 Thistle Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow (she signed with her X mark) - steelwork labourer of 67 Westburn Rows. He was born at Bogend, Cambuslang - note his surname was recorded as McKurdy on his marriage registration, and as McKardie in 1891 Census
As far as I am aware Archibald and Catherine Murphy McCurdy had:
Archibald [1878]; Patrick [1877]; Isabella [1878]; Elizabeth [1881]; Annie [1884]; John [1886] and Mary [1890]. Patrick and John died unmarried. Archibald had family
I know you already have this detail, from the Mitchell/McDade connection:
Walter Mitchell [c1795 - indicative date] , farmer
Robert Mitchell [1818/29 - 10 April 1898] married Hannah McDaid aka Ellen McDade on 24 September 1864 at Dunfanaghy Registrars Office by John Moffitt, Registrar, in the presence of Hugh Hofferman and Andrew McNutt (she was a daughter of Dominick McDaid, farmer) he was a farmer, aet 35, from Down, and she was from Kilmacloo, aet 24. She signed with her X Mark. His death at Dooen, (registration district of Letterkenny), aet 80, was registered by Robert Mitchell, of Dooen, his son. He was a farmer.
Susan McDaid [1818 - 28 December 1878] - her death at Glenkeeragh, (registration district of Church Hill, (union of Letterkenny) was registered by Ann McDaid, of Glenkeeragh, by her X Mark - she was a farmer’s widow, aet 60. Note: Glenkeeragh lies to the west of Letterkenny
John Mitchell [27 September 1864] - his birth at Glenkeragh,(registration district of Church Hill, union of Letterkenny) was registered by Susan McDade, grandmother, of Glenkeragh. Father, Robert was a labourer, resident at Doohan.
Susan Mitchell [10 March 1866] - her birth at Glenkerah was registered by Ellen Mitchell, her mother, by her. X. Mark. Her father was a farmer.
Joseph Mitchell [1874 - 1955] married Mary McCurdy in 1905 (registration district of Cambuslang) - does this seem right for their children?
Catherine Mitchell [1907 - 1996] Cambuslang
Mary Mitchell [1909] Cambuslang
Joseph Mitchell [1912] - Cambuslang
Archibald Mitchell [1914] - Cambuslang
John Mitchell [1917 - 1931] Cambuslang
Edward Mitchell [1920 - 2007] Cambuslang
Mary Nicholson (descends from one of the above?)
Robert Mitchell [1856 - 4 February 1934] dsp - his death at Dooen, Letterkenny, was registered by Bella Russell, from Dooen. He was a labourer. - death registered on 3 March 1934
(Bella Russell also registered the death of an Eliza Jane Russell [1866 - 20 February 1934], aet 68, from Dooen, a married woman, and wife of a labourer - on 28 February 1934).

Fabulous work well done ! This is what I have for you....

John1917-1931
Edward 1920-2007
Walter Mitchell died aft 1864
I didn't know Robert Mitchell had a son called Robert
I'm assuming Ann McDaid would have been short for Hannah ?
Going by my DNA results I have a huge amount of DNA matches linked to this family and all indications are pointing to me being a descendent of Joseph Mitchell 1912-1973, the closest I can get is a half first cousin the older generation don't want to do their DNA test. Hope this is of some help to you.
