Hi,
I’m new to English genealogy and tbh I’m really struggling.
My mother Isabel Stephenson was born Newcastle 20/10/1926.
Her father was George Frederick Stephenson, born 20/01/1893.
Her mother was Elizabeth Jane Dodds.
Her grandfather was Samuel Stephenson, born 1867.
Elizabeth Jane Dodds’ father was John Robert Dodds, born June 1871.
Mt mother was Catholic, and I’ve always had a vague notion there is Irish ancestry in there, but I’ve hit a brick wall.
Does this tie in with anybody else’s history?

If you haven’t found any evidence of Irish ancestry via census returns etc - have you considered doing a DNA test?
I notice you have only listed the male line - could there be Irish origins in the wives of the above?
Samuel married Margaret Hall 1888 - he was b Yorkshire according to the 1891 census & Mgt was b Northumberland
Have you traced either line backwards to establish any Irish possibility?
If you have - and found no proof - why do you think there is Irish ancestry?

1881 census 14 Plummer Street Newcastle

Do you have John Robert Dodds birth certificate?
1939 says he was born 20 April 1871
Birth registration Newcastle Upon Tyne June quarter 1871 Vol. 10B page 25
If it has the correct DOB or is off just a little I have the correct family.

Sorry posted before I read your chart.
Margaret HALL is wife of Samuel and her father is Andrew Hall

Definitely sounds like the same family

As I said in my original post, I have a vague recollection from childhood (which is a long time ago) that they were Catholic and had Irish origins.
How could I progress that line of enquiry ?
-
Possible Robert Dodds age 41 death registered 1879 New Castle December quarter.
Ages of the others named Robert Dodds do not fit and we know he died before 1881 census.
1861 census Scotland Berwickshire
James Hughes 49
Isabella 56
Henry 26
William 24
James 20
Jane 18
Helen 16
John 13
Joseph DODDS 2 grand son born Buncle Berwickshire.
So it looks like James and Isabella are Eliza Hughes parents.
The Stephenson' seems to be Anglican or C of E so if there is Catholic in your line it would appear to be from the Scottish line.
Look for the baptism of the in Newcastle that will tell you.

George Oliver Hall 7
*Margaret 5 Hall born Bedlington
Jane Oliver Hall 3
James Hall 1 (living with Margaret and Samuel Stephenson 1891 census age 21) previously posted.

Jane was also born Scotland!
So is she Sarah's older sister?

As there is no indication of any Irish ancestry via online resources your best approach would be to take a DNA test which would either confirm or rule out that possibility

Is there any one company best ?
